“St. Paul experienced very severely within himself the rebellion of the senses and of the passions, for which he uttered this lament: ‘Therefore, I myself, with the mind serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.’ This is of comfort to all those poor souls who, assailed by the irascible appetite, feel in themselves a bitter contrast: they would not want to feel, nor have those motions, that rancor, or that lively imagination, […], but without them wanting it, they arise within them and they oppose them.”
