“Our Lord, always solicitous for our good, in order to preserve us from the great enemy of vainglory, warns us of it in various places in the Gospel. Does He not perhaps tell us that when we want to pray, we should retire to our room, close the door and pray alone with God, so as not to let others know of our prayer; that when we fast we should wash our face so that we might not let others know of it by the dirtiness and dreariness of our face; that in giving alms the right must not know what the left is doing?”
