Dear Fr. Ignatius,
Again, this was another wonderful homily. Thank you. I have some questions on the Intelligent Design theory. I have a family member who is a Ph.D. biologist and this subject, when we dare to bring it up, usually gets quite heated. I usually feel woefully unprepared to take it on and look like a bumbling idiot. I can’t seem to find some acceptable websites to help me out. First of all, the Vatican supposedly supported Evolutionary Theory a number of years back with the addendum that if there was a ‘big bang’, it was clearly orchestrated by Almighty God. This family member accepts this just fine … Darwinism with God as the initial thrust, if you will. However, our current Pope appears to be changing some of these thoughts. I wish I could understand this a bit better not just so I can ‘take on’ this family member, but for my own edification and for my children’s sake most importantly as they will need to know how to defend this topic for a number of years while in College, etc.

This is such a great insight…especially when many people tend to minimalize the damage that venial sin causes on the sinner, how it expands and overshadows, and even puts one out of touch with Creation.

One of the difficulties in communicating with people today is that they are not only unfamiliar with theology or philosophy, but they are also not well versed in science either. If science came to replace all other authorities because of it’s visible achiements it couldn’t replace man’s need for meaning – why am I here?
It’s why they fall so easily for bad science – they accept scientists as moral authority. Freedom is “all choices” – it’s not freedom for everyone because that would put restraints on one’s choices.
SO a policy is “free” while an informed conscience is not free. In fact, to many people if their is no God (or if God is a extention of your imagination) then it’s not possible for you to have a conscience. You are deluded and you’re cramping my style.
Today people identify with “narratives” – the modern myth in their search for meaning. Instead of looking for a way to live they look for a storyline (fame, achievement, causes, consumption, etc.) to fulfill those needs. It’s very hard to explain to them that their life already has meaning and they need something more solid than a “dream” to get them through the times the movie running in their heads doesn’t match up to real life.

Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner, but just to get you started on a little research, I would start by Googling the “Wethersfield Institute”, see what it says about them on Wikipedia and go from there. I read one of their publications on ID and it was very good.
