Conferences #106 – Deacon Jack – miracles from Newman ( 44min) >>> Play |

Ave Maria!
Witness Lecture for the Newman-Scotus Symposium is given by Deacon Jack Sullivan: A Personal Account of the Experience of a Miracle
He talks about Redemptive Suffering of Newman. There is much suffering in life but if we accept with trust in God, that he has our best interest in mind, then we will grow in grace. This is the “kindly light” of truth that Newman always followed in the “gathering gloom”. He relates this to his own suffering that led him to pray for the intercession of venerable Newman. One day he woke with excruciating pain in his legs which turned out to be a sever restriction in his spinal cord by the physical deformation of his vertebra and disks. His Doctor said it was the worst case he had seen in seventeen years as a back specialist. Listen to Jack as he describes how one simple prayer to John Newman was able to cure him first temporarily and then permanently as he prayed a second time. He also relates other miracles that have occurred with Newman’s intercession.

Homily #101001 ( 07min) Play – Today is the feast day of St Therese of Lisieux of the Child Jesus. Fr. Ignatius celebrates this in the Extraordinary Form as a votive Mass since her feast day is on the 3rd of October in the old calender. He preaches on St. Therese’s life who through the help of her very devout parents was given a very good start on the road to sanctity. He describes how even though she was an almost entirely unknown nun who died at the young age of 24 in a cloistered convent, her great sanctity was discovered by the outside world and she was Canonized as a saint, made a patron of missionaries throughout the world, declared a doctor of the Church and virtually every Catholic Church has set-up a statue of her.

1st: isa 66:12-14

Homily #100930 ( 04min) Play – Today is the Memorial of St. Jerome Doctor of the Church and writer of the Latin Vulgate. Fr. Ignatius points out that in order to get the truth that is in scripture you must have the right interpretation and thus God has not only given us scripture but an infallible interpreter of it as scripture itself clearly states in 1Tim 3:15 Pillar and foundation of truth is the Church. And Mat 16:18 On this rock (Peter) I will build my Church and the gates of hell (error) will not prevail against it.

Homily #100715 ( 11min) Play – Today is the Feast day of St. Bonaventure and Fr. Angelo preaches on how St Bonaventure combined true sanctity and high education and so he became the Seraphic Doctor in the footsteps of his spiritual father, St. Francis, the seraphic saint. St Bonaventure focused on the importance of the will in theology as opposed to St Thomas who focused on the intellect. He also worked to ‘refound’ the order when it was in danger of splitting.

Resp: psa 16:5-5, 7-8, 9, 11

Homily #100427 ( 10min) Play – St. Peter Canisius lived in the 1500s in a time that fulfilled the prophecy of St. Paul in today’s first reading:
For there shall be a time when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears: and will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables.
Listen how St. Peter tactfully and lovingly deals with these errors.

Homily #100127 ( 09min) Play – St Bernard of Clairvaux preached the second crusade. But, despite the fact that he was able to perform many miracles to confirm that this was the will of God, the crusade failed resulting in the loss of many Christian soldiers and a setback for Christian control of the Holy Land. Fr. Ignatius points out that it is sometimes God’s will that we be humbled in order to bring about greater virtue.

Homily #100114 ( 06min) Play – St. Hilary of Poitiers fought the heresy of Arianism in his time. He did this by being true to the Magisterium. As the Catechism says:
Par 85 “The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church alone. Its authority in this matter is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ.” This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome.
This simple policy guarantees that we won’t fall into error of personal interpretation whether of scripture as the Protestants do or of Tradition as the ultra Traditionalists do.

Gianna Beretta was born in Magenta (Milan) October 4, 1922. Already as a youth she willingly accepted the gift of faith and the clearly Christian education that she received from her excellent parents. As a result, she experienced life as a marvellous gift from God, had a strong faith in Providence and was convinced of the necessity and effectiveness of prayer.
