We hope you enjoy this concert that our friars – primarily those who are studying for the priesthood – recently performed in the town of Comacchio, Italy, at the shrine of Our Lady of the Royal Hall, or “Santa Maria in Aula Regia” in Italian. Included in the choir are Fra Pio Maximilian, Fra Alan Bernardino (recently ordained to the diaconate), Fra Josemaria Mary, and our own Fra Terrance behind the camera (well, seated in the pews, to be exact).

Ave Maria,
In the Roman Breviary this hymn is used at Sunday Vespers during Lent from the first Sunday in Lent until the Friday before Passion Sunday.

AUDI, benigne Conditor, nostras preces cum fletibus, sacrata in abstinentia ¹ fusas quadragenaria.	O MERCIFUL Creator, hear! To us in pity bow Thine ear: accept the tearful prayer we raise in this our fast of forty days.
Scrutator alme cordium, infirma tu scis virium; ad te reversis exhibe remissionis gratiam.	Our hearts are open, Lord, to Thee: Thou knowest our infirmity; pour out on all who seek Thy face abundance of Thy pardoning grace.
Multum quidem peccavimus, sed parce confitentibus, tuique laude nominis ² confer medelam languidis.	Our sins are many, this we know; spare us, good Lord, Thy mercy show; and for the honor of Thy name our fainting souls to life reclaim.
Sic corpus extra conteri dona per abstinentiam, ieiunet ut mens sobria a labe prorsus criminum. ³	Give us self-control that springs from discipline of outward things, that fasting inward secretly the soul may purely dwell with Thee.

O Sacred Head Surrounded- Hymn

Ave Maria!
This hymn is based on a long medieval Latin poem, Salve mundi salutare, with stanzas addressing the various parts of Christ’s body hanging on the Cross. The last part of the poem, from which the hymn is taken, is addressed to Christ’s head, and begins “Salve caput cruentatum.” The poem is attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153).

O bleeding Head so wounded, Reviled and put to scorn!
Death’s pallid hue comes o’er Thee, The glow of life decays,

On this Franciscan Feast Day of Feast of Our Lady of the Angels (the Portiuncula) we draw attention to this Marian hymn, “O Sanctissima” traces its roots back to the 17th century. This version is sung by the Daughters of Mary, enjoy!
