Mary Vitamin for July 23rd

Topic: The First Sorrowful Mystery of the Rosary
(In honor of the month of the Precious Blood)

Quote:
And there appeared to him an angel from heaven strengthening him. And being in
an agony, he prayed the longer. And his sweat became as drops of blood,
trickling down upon the ground.
Luke 22:43-4

Meditation:
Venerable Anne Catherine Emmerich explains that Our Lord in the garden of
Gethsemane “understood not only the consequence of every species of
concupiscence, but also its own peculiar expiatory chastisement, the
significance of all the instruments of torture connected with it; so that not
only the thought of the instrument made Him shudder, but also the sinful rage of
him that invented it, the fury and wickedness of all that had ever used it, and
the impatience of all, whether innocent or guilty, who had been tortured with
it. All these tortures and afflictions Jesus perceived in an interior
contemplation, and the sight filled Him with such horror that a bloody sweat
started from the pores of His sacred Body.”
The Life of Jesus Christ and Biblical Revelations, Volume 4, (Tan Books), 89

Does a mother suffer only when she witnesses the suffering of her child? Or does
she suffer over and over again in her heart, anticipating the suffering of her
child? Is Our Lady not aware of the avarice of Judas and the hatred of the
leaders in the Temple towards her Son? A mother in her compassion cannot help
but anticipate the pain and suffering of her child. It is not recorded in Holy
Scripture that Our Lady was present in the Garden, but her heart was always
unwaveringly united with God, and she would share in his agony on the eve of the
great manifestation of God’s passionate love for mankind. She would share, the
way a Mother shares in the suffering of her son: silently, meekly, heart
breaking, full of love, yet accepting.

Resolution:
I will meditate in the Rosary what it cost Our Lady to accept the Will of God in
the Redemption of humanity. Our Lady does not need to be present in
the Garden of Gethsemane to share in the suffering of Her Son.

Marian Vow:
The Immaculate was the universal Mediatrix of redemption, to wit, was the only
Coredemptrix who has shared in person with the Redeemer –“under Him and with
Him” (LG 56) — the work of universal redemption, cooperating actively with her
tears, mixed in the Blood of Her Crucified Son, to rescue sinful mankind, from
Adam to the last man who lives on the earth.
Marian Seraphic Pathways, Statutes #51

I give this resolution to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Thanks be to God for graces received.

Ave Maria!

Fr. Angelo Geiger gives the first talk for our retreat at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center called “Apocalypse Now” which is on Revelation, the last and most mysterious book of the Bible. In this talk he covers the historical aspect  of the book.

Reality of persecution is a current concern and not something that we don’t have to wait for and this is reflected in our literature and movies both religious and secular. We should not look at this book as a survival guide for the end times at least not in the secular sense but rather a spiritual guide, a call to holiness that begins now.

  • Common Interpretations: historic, prophetic, or both
  • Should not lead to fear but should have us grow in holiness.
  • Liturgical overtones as a means for being prepared for difficult life
  • Need to avoid sensation
  • Nature of Crisis in the Bible
  • The presence Mary and the Cross
  • Salvation arises out of Crisis, the Cross
  • Over optimism and pessimism during a Crisis
  • Victory follows Crisis especially the Apocalypse
  • End of the Year of Faith, End of the Liturgical year
  • Jesus is Christ the King, Lord of History

Homily #150412b ( 18min) Play – Fr. Joseph on the meaning of this feast of Divine Mercy based on the Gospel reading showing that Jesus’ first message to the Apostles is one of mercy and He introduces the sacrament of penance which lends so much mercy to absolve our sins. He outlines the revelations of Jesus to St. Faustina which focuses so much on the mercy of God, who wanted to establish this day as dedicated to His mercy for our modern age. We should respond as follows:

  • Thank God for His Mercy
  • Have Mercy toward others
    • Corporal works of mercy
    • Spiritual works of mercy
  • Accept His grace, repent of sin
  • Trust in Jesus in all things
    • Repeat often, “Jesus I trust in you,” especially during difficult moments

In the homily for Tuesday of the 33rd Week in Ordinary Time (Nov 20), Fr. Alan explains how the readings point to the need to pray and discern God’s will in order to avoid the spiritual ills that plagued the Churches of Sardis and Laodicea: activism and apathy.

Sincere prayer leads us, like Zaccheus, to conversion and and authentic living of the Gospel; in other words: salvation. Failure to pray and discern can lead to a practice of religion that is neither pleasing to God, nor beneficial to us and to our neighbor.

Ave Maria!

Fr Ignatius gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Nov 25 on how the feast of Christ the King refers both to the coming of Christ in Bethlehem and also to the final coming and how this fulfills the prophesy of Daniel that Jesus is to be King of the Jews and of the universe as indicated in the book of Revelations. Father relates accepting Christ as King to accepting truth in doctrine.

Fr. Matthias gives the homily for the memorial of St. James of the March (Franciscan Priest, Nov 28) on the grace of final perseverance. Fr John Lawrence gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Oct 05, 2023, on the lives of Francis Xavier Seelos, and St. Faustina Kowalska, both of whom have their feast today.

Today, we honor St. Faustina and Blessed Francis Xavier Silos, with a particular focus on St. Faustina due to her popularity. Blessed Silos, born on January 11, 1819, in Bavaria, devoted himself to religious service, becoming a Redemptorist missionary in America, aiding German-speaking immigrants. After some trials with language, he became a well-regarded confessor and spiritual director, traveling across states to preach. His life was cut short by yellow fever on October 4, 1867, in New Orleans.

St. Faustina, born 38 years later in Poland, exhibited a spiritual inclination from a young age. Despite family obligations, she pursued religious life, joining the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Warsaw on August 1, 1925. Throughout her 13-year service across various convents, she had many mystical experiences, documenting them in her diary. Her notable encounter on February 22, 1931, led to the creation of the Divine Mercy image, depicting Jesus with rays of mercy, under the guidance of Father Sopoczko and an artist in Vilnius. The image was publicly venerated during a jubilee celebration at the eastern gate of Vilnius in 1934, symbolically linked to the prophecy in Ezekiel’s vision of the temple’s eastern gate. St. Faustina’s revelations on Divine Mercy continued until her health declined due to tuberculosis, leading to her passing on October 5, 1938. Her teachings on Divine Mercy were further propagated posthumously through Blessed Michael Sopoczko’s writings and the publication of her diary.

Ezekiel’s vision of the temple’s eastern gate can be linked to the scripture passage: Ezekiel 44:1-2 – The eastern gate shall remain closed, it shall not be opened – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/ezekiel/44?1.
Similarly, Moses’ encounter with God can be referenced to Exodus 3:1-12 – Moses encounters God in a burning bush, who commissions him to deliver Israel – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/exodus/3?1.
