Topic: The First Sorrowful Mystery of the Rosary
(In honor of the month of the Precious Blood)

Meditation:
Venerable Anne Catherine Emmerich explains that Our Lord in the garden of
Gethsemane “understood not only the consequence of every species of
concupiscence, but also its own peculiar expiatory chastisement, the
significance of all the instruments of torture connected with it; so that not
only the thought of the instrument made Him shudder, but also the sinful rage of
him that invented it, the fury and wickedness of all that had ever used it, and
the impatience of all, whether innocent or guilty, who had been tortured with
it. All these tortures and afflictions Jesus perceived in an interior
contemplation, and the sight filled Him with such horror that a bloody sweat
started from the pores of His sacred Body.”

Does a mother suffer only when she witnesses the suffering of her child? Or does
she suffer over and over again in her heart, anticipating the suffering of her
child? Is Our Lady not aware of the avarice of Judas and the hatred of the
leaders in the Temple towards her Son? A mother in her compassion cannot help
but anticipate the pain and suffering of her child. It is not recorded in Holy
Scripture that Our Lady was present in the Garden, but her heart was always
unwaveringly united with God, and she would share in his agony on the eve of the
great manifestation of God’s passionate love for mankind. She would share, the
way a Mother shares in the suffering of her son: silently, meekly, heart
breaking, full of love, yet accepting.

Resolution:
I will meditate in the Rosary what it cost Our Lady to accept the Will of God in
the Redemption of humanity. Our Lady does not need to be present in
the Garden of Gethsemane to share in the suffering of Her Son.

Marian Vow:
The Immaculate was the universal Mediatrix of redemption, to wit, was the only
Coredemptrix who has shared in person with the Redeemer –“under Him and with
Him” (LG 56) — the work of universal redemption, cooperating actively with her
tears, mixed in the Blood of Her Crucified Son, to rescue sinful mankind, from
Adam to the last man who lives on the earth.

The Gospel reading today presents Jesus’ teachings on loving one’s enemies. This is not natural, but supernatural; not human, but divine. As such, it is the sign of the true Christian, one who loves with the love of God, not of man. We, Catholics, do have many enemies today, but we cannot hate them. Rather, we must love them, not because they are our brothers, but so that they may be so. In this way we imitate Christ who loved us and died for us while we were still his enemies. The world and our nation are torn by division and hatred, only the love and mercy of Christians can squelch this. Let us follow the words of Scripture: Do not repay anyone evil for evil… be not conquered by evil but conquer evil with good.

Fr Alan gives the homily on the memorial of St. Nicholas Pick and companions (Jul 09), Franciscan martyrs who were asked to deny the faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and to deny the primacy of the Pope as head of the Church. They preferred to remain in the word of Jesus as true disciples and forfeit their lives rather than their salvation. For their fidelity, they were tortured and killed, ultimately receiving the martyrs’ crown and eternal life.

On the memorial of Sts. Nicolas Tavelic and Companions, Martyrs (Nov 14), Fr. Matthias gives the homily on how we are called to share the Gospel of salvation in Christ even with the Muslims in our multicultural society.

It is hard to pretend that Islam is a religion of peace; the fear of a violent reprisal for pointing out contradictions between this politically correct claim and the widespread Islamic persecution of Christians makes it even worse. However, we too were once hateful and hating one another, until we came to know the God of Love, Whom the Muslims likewise are called to know and accept as well (cf Titus 3:3).

In the homily for Tuesday of the Third Week of Lent (Mar 26), Fr. Matthias explains that Our Lord’s instruction to “forgive your brother from your heart” does not mean we must be “emotionally ready” to forgive: rather, it means we must make the firm decision to do so.

Despite feelings of hurt and anger that we may not be able to forget or escape, if we rely on God’s love and God’s strength, we can rise above resentment and forgive those who have hurt us, with the grace God will place in our heart.

Fr Ignatius gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Apr 28 2019, Divine Mercy Sunday, on how God’s mercy endures for ever, even when it is most difficult to see, when atrocious crimes are committed like in the Sri Lanka bombing. Father explains the origins of the feast of the Divine Mercy with the apparitions of Christ to Sr. Faustina Kowalska and how this relates to Christ’s redemption and the image of divine mercy that depicts the flowing of mercy from the heart of Christ. He then explains how this is to be painted on our own hearts and actions, in deeds of mercy, always and everywhere. This includes when we are most inclined naturally to hatred and vengeance. He uses the example of Fr. Fernando, pastor of St. Anthony’s Shrine in Colombo, Sri Lanka, who, after the terrorist bombings that killed scores of his own parishioners and friends and almost killed him said in response, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Let us all follow his example of mercy and forgiveness in difficult times and so display the supernatural action of grace that seems so rare in today’s world.

He explains how much damage anger does to the soul in this life and the next and how we can avoid it by contemplating how many insults and injuries were inflicted on Christ for our sins and how much reparation we need to do for our continued personal sins and those of others.
