Homily #100116 ( 05min) Play – St Berard and Companions were the first martyrs in the Franciscan Order when they were killed after having preached to the Mohammedans. Father explains that martyrdom is the ideal in that it is the ultimate sacrifice and so the ultimate love and sanctity. He further explains that we are all called to martyrdom but more to the martyrdom by “slow fire”.

Fi News #68 – Bushfire at Perth Friary ! ( 05min) >>> Play

In the afternoon of March 1st, 2010 a bushfire started near the friary in Perth, Australia and grew quickly. It jumped the main road and approached our backyard. We decided to evacuate the friary. We took the Blessed Sacrament, a few liturgical items of worth, a few personal items (passports, etc.) and the computers and loaded up the cars. We turned on the lawn sprinklers on the side facing the fire, closed all windows and doors, placed a statue of Our Lady to watch over the fire and drove down the road to a safe distance to wait it out. Roads were blocked by the police. After noticing that the smoke in the immediate area of the friary had died down and after the police told us the friary was ok, we went to a benefactor’s house for something to eat and drink only to be allowed back onto the property around 10:00pm. Damage was limited to a few sheds in the area, no homes or loss of life but about 47 hectares (115 acres) burned.

The friars had a bushfire not far from their Perth friary on March 13, 2011. It looked really bad at first, but it was on the other side of a limestone quarry in a native bush parkland area surrounded by firefighters. If the wind changed direction, or the fire managed to get around the quarry, then we might have a repeat of last year’s fire. Fortunately, the firefighters kept the perimeter of the fire under control and pretty much let the interior burn. Planes and helicopters dropped water on the fire all day and just before evening it was put out.

Joachim on the strange behavior of Jesus in his determination to be tolerant to the Samaritans, rebuking his disciples for suggesting that He send fire down upon them. Father points out that there are good reasons to be tolerant and bad. The good reasons are to be God-centered, doing the will of God and loving others. The bad reason is to be self-centered and promote self-indulgence in opposition to God.

Homily #130720bss ( 14min) Play – Fr. Elias give the homily for the Feast day of St. Elias as he is called in Latin or in Hebrew Elijah, the prophet of the Old Testament. He explains the roles of the prophets. He was called the prophet of fire because he called down fire from heaven multiple times. Elijah is actually means a very short Creed in that it means “Yahweh is God” which is fitting for his mission which was to turn the Israelite from false Gods, the Baals. He says that today we need him again since the Baals have returned in form of Foot-Baal, Basket-Baal and even goof-baal, in that we worship ourselves. He finally associates Elijah with the End times in that he is taken to heaven on a fiery chariot near the valley of Armageddon whee the final battle between good and evil will take place and will come to an end with fire coming down to consume the army of the anti-Christ.
