Mary Vitamin for July 23rd

Topic: The First Sorrowful Mystery of the Rosary
(In honor of the month of the Precious Blood)

Quote:
And there appeared to him an angel from heaven strengthening him. And being in
an agony, he prayed the longer. And his sweat became as drops of blood,
trickling down upon the ground.
Luke 22:43-4

Meditation:
Venerable Anne Catherine Emmerich explains that Our Lord in the garden of
Gethsemane “understood not only the consequence of every species of
concupiscence, but also its own peculiar expiatory chastisement, the
significance of all the instruments of torture connected with it; so that not
only the thought of the instrument made Him shudder, but also the sinful rage of
him that invented it, the fury and wickedness of all that had ever used it, and
the impatience of all, whether innocent or guilty, who had been tortured with
it. All these tortures and afflictions Jesus perceived in an interior
contemplation, and the sight filled Him with such horror that a bloody sweat
started from the pores of His sacred Body.”
The Life of Jesus Christ and Biblical Revelations, Volume 4, (Tan Books), 89

Does a mother suffer only when she witnesses the suffering of her child? Or does
she suffer over and over again in her heart, anticipating the suffering of her
child? Is Our Lady not aware of the avarice of Judas and the hatred of the
leaders in the Temple towards her Son? A mother in her compassion cannot help
but anticipate the pain and suffering of her child. It is not recorded in Holy
Scripture that Our Lady was present in the Garden, but her heart was always
unwaveringly united with God, and she would share in his agony on the eve of the
great manifestation of God’s passionate love for mankind. She would share, the
way a Mother shares in the suffering of her son: silently, meekly, heart
breaking, full of love, yet accepting.

Resolution:
I will meditate in the Rosary what it cost Our Lady to accept the Will of God in
the Redemption of humanity. Our Lady does not need to be present in
the Garden of Gethsemane to share in the suffering of Her Son.

Marian Vow:
The Immaculate was the universal Mediatrix of redemption, to wit, was the only
Coredemptrix who has shared in person with the Redeemer –“under Him and with
Him” (LG 56) — the work of universal redemption, cooperating actively with her
tears, mixed in the Blood of Her Crucified Son, to rescue sinful mankind, from
Adam to the last man who lives on the earth.
Marian Seraphic Pathways, Statutes #51

I give this resolution to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Thanks be to God for graces received.

Homily #130217b ( 17min) Play – Fr. Elias preaches on how to deal with temptation and the Devil. Temptation comes from concupiscence which is based on the flesh, the world and Devil. Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden failed in the face of temptation, while Jesus, fasting in the desert for forty days, conquered the temptations of the Devil. Lent makes present in our lives this same victorious strategy in our life-long battle.

Ave Maria!

Fr. Ben Luedtke gives the twelfth of twenty-five conferences for his Eight Day Ignatian Retreat. The subjects he covers are: View point from Jerusalem (Christ’s) vs. Babylon (Satan’s) how we must get rid of this view that is contrary to God that is a downdraft the pulls us away from God, to deceive us. How we must avoid concupiscence, pride of life. How Christ and his angels lifts us up to God who is all love. Ideas and images and their spiritual effects, desires and their effects.

About the retreat:   The retreat was conducted by Fr. Ben Luedtke who has condensed St. Ignatius’ classic thirty day spiritual exercises into an eight day retreat that makes this life changing spiritual experience more accessible to the average person. It consists of twenty-five conferences (recorded in this video series), which are used by those on retreat along with further reflections given to them as handouts to base their hour long meditations which they make after each conference. The typical day consists of three of these conferences, one in the morning, afternoon and evening. Fr. Ben also gave them private spiritual direction and Mass each day. The retreat took place at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center in Bloomington, IN from Oct 9-17th, 2016. Father usually gives these retreats at this retreat center in the spring and fall of each year. See his website for other times and places or to arrange one near you.

In the homily for the Baptism of the Lord (Jan 13), Fr. Alan explains that Jesus had no need for repentance. However, in obeying the will of His Father by submitting to John’s symbolic baptism he identified himself – though sinless – with sinful humanity, and becoming our Brother, Our Lord makes it possible for us to become Children of God. By His example, he leads us to conversion and Baptism, the sacrament by which we are forgiven and saved.

After a brief overview of the life of the penitential Franciscan Saint John Joseph of the Cross (priest of the Alcantaran reform, Mar 05), Fr. Matthias offers guidance for making an effective and meritorious Lenten resolution (4:27). Identifying the main principle to observe, he offers three practical categories to choose from which are readily available in the life of everyone.

It is not necessary to find some creative penance in order to make this Lent a most spiritually fruitful time or penance, purification, and growth in love of the Lord, as life offers plenty of ready-made possibilities for meaningful and meritorious mortification.
