We can satisfy that hunger here by receiving Communion with faith, and in Heaven God will satiate our thirst for Him directly, and nothing will be able to take that joy from us.

Bodily death doesn’t mean the end of the soul, and whatever the soul had merited during its time on Earth, the body will experience for eternity after the general resurrection. Today we remember the martyrs of Uganda who considered their souls more important than even their lives, and refused to give into the impure demands of the king. We too must be strong, but we must find this strength in God, He will help us if only we turn to Him in our need.

Homily #150716n ( 07min) Play – Father tells us of the tradition that there was a company of hermits which gathered on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land after Elijah destroyed the priests of Baal and prayed for rain to come down after three years of complete drought. These hermits were devoted to praying for the coming Messiah and the woman who would become his mother. When Joseph, Mary, and Jesus returned to Nazareth after their exile in Egypt, they stopped and revealed the Messiah to the monks, who were there after devoted to Jesus and His Mother Mary, and are know known as the Carmelite Order. Today we also remember the giving of the Brown Scapular to the Carmerite Order, and Father encourages us all to wear it faithfully, for it reminds us that we are Children of Mary, and that we wear the “yoke of Christ”.

The woman of Revelation, clothed with the sun, is a great sign. Of the many meanings in Revelation 12, Father Angelo points out three. The first is the victory of Christ over sin and death; not merely at the end of time, but even now. The second is that She is our Mother too and that Her victory is our victory. By showing us our destiny, we receive hope and strength. The third is that, by Her bodily Assumption, we see the dignity of the human body. The Assumption is the proof the Jesus is in control, and we can have confidence in Him even in the midst of crisis.

The Pharisee in today’s gospel presumed on his own merit and–praying to himself–compares himself to sinners. But we must remember that we cannot justify ourselves, we are all sinners, and that from those who have received more will be expected. We cannot presume, but we must hope. Sometimes, this hope is tried by suffering, but we must accept the sufferings God sends us, since it is by accepting them that we receive the grace to carry them with joy and peace. We must do what we can, realizing how little it is, and rely, in hope, on God.
