Christopher West has quoted me in his new book, At the Heart of the Gospel: Reclaiming the Body for the New Evangelization.
Here is West’s own description of the book which he relates to the debate that has rippled across the internet and to which this blog has contributed:
In the midst of these conversations, my work as a popularizer of John Paul II’s teaching has been the subject of some rather harsh critiques. During an extended sabbatical in 2010, I reflected prayerfully on the various challenges my work has received, seeking to glean as much as possible from what various authors were saying. This book is the fruit of those reflections (2).
Kevin O’Brien of the Theater of the Word Incorporated has posted on the subject of West’s critique of my statements. The source of those statements was a guest post I wrote for Dawn Eden. West does not cite his source, so his readers have no ability to assess (more…)
Conferences #93 – Fr James McCurry opens the Newman-Scotus Symposium ( 11min) >>> Play
Ave Maria!
Fr James McCurry gives an inspirational welcome and introduction to the Newman-Scotus Symposium at the Washington Theological Union on Oct 22, 2010. He reads a warm letter of encouragement from Friar Marco Tasca, OFM Conv., the Minster General of the Conventual Franciscans from Rome, asking the participants to energetically uncover, for all the world to see, the common intellectual treasure that these two holy and eminent British scholars share, centered on the Absolute Primacy of Christ and the primacy of Love. He reflects on the Pope’s words at the very recent beatification of Newman in Birmingham, England where he mentions Newman’s motto “Cor ad Cor Loquitor“, “Heart speaks unto Heart” where God and man speak heart to heart. Fr. McCurry mentions the equivalent starting point for Scotus’ theology where “God wills to love. God wills to be loved. God willed to have co-lovers of himself” and so he created the world and man with the goal of the incarnation via Mary Immaculate. He ends by reciting a prayer to Our Lady written by Bl. John Cardinal Newman to give us protection and the purity of heart and mind to be good and wise Christians.

Ave Maria!
Recently Friar Terrance had the opportunity to chat with Fr. Jerome Pica, F.I., and to talk with him about Bl. John Duns Scotus, a famous Franciscan scholastic philosopher/theologian who is still unknown to most of the world. The Franciscans of the Immaculate in Italy have recently finished a full-length movie on the life of Duns Scotus. We hope you enjoy the interview which we’ve titled “Who is John Duns Scotus…and why is he important?”, and we send our apologies for the setting of the interview…but it’s the best we could do!

Homily #100715 (11min) Play – Today is the Feast day of St. Bonaventure and Fr. Angelo preaches on how St Bonaventure combined true sanctity and high education and so he became the Seraphic Doctor in the footsteps of his spiritual father, St. Francis, the seraphic saint. St Bonaventure focused on the importance of the will in theology as opposed to St Thomas who focused on the intellect. He also worked to ‘refound’ the order when it was in danger of splitting.

Roving Reporter #95 – Dawn Eden interviewed by Fra Roderic (28min) >>> Play
Ave Maria!
Dawn Eden, who last year gave us the great story of her conversion through St. Maximilian Kolbe and G.K. Chesterton, recently returned to Griswold, CT, and we accosted her for another interview which she graciously granted. This time she talks about her studies for her Masters in Moral Theology at Dominican House of Studies in DC and how they relate to current issues in our society. In particular she refers to the recent debate on Christopher West’s interpretation of Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. She relates what she has found about how morality was taught before and after the Second Vatican Council and how this compares with West’s assertion that Catholic morality was very prudish before the Council. It was this assertion that was the basis for his very controversial Nightline interview where he favorably compared John Paul II to Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy, since both, in their own way, saved us from this supposed prudery. Listen to Dawn’s fair, informative analysis of this controversy.
Marycast #96 (10min) Play – Dr. Miravalle introduces a new mini-series on Mary Queen of Angels where he will present theology and the teachings of the fathers of the Church and how this doctrine is based on her relation to her Son Jesus. Finally he will discuss how this truth was part of the test to which the Angels were subjected which would determine whether they remain angels of light or become demons.
St. Lawrence of Brindisi (1559-1619) Doctor of the Church
God is love, and all his operations proceed from love. Once he wills to manifest that goodness by sharing his love outside himself, then the Incarnation becomes the supreme manifestation of his goodness and love and glory. So, Christ was intended before all other creatures and for his own sake. For him all things were created and to him all things must be subject, and God loves all creatures in and because of Christ. Christ is the first-born of every creature, and the whole of humanity as well as the created world finds its foundation and meaning in him. Moreover, this would have been the case even if Adam had not sinned.
Marycast Specials #59 (10min) Play – In this episode, Dr. Miravalle discusses the miracles attributed to St. Joseph through the intercession of Bl. Andre Bessette. It is estimated that half a million miracles occurred through the intercession of Bl. Andre and the use of the oil of St. Joseph which he distributed from the Basilica in Montreal, Canada. Bl. Andre is believed to have helped cure 1 out of every 10 or 11 people who spoke with him.
Marycast Specials #57 (10min) Play – St. Maximilian’s answer to the rise of atheism & Freemasonry in our times was total, universal consecration to the Immaculate. How do we return the universe to Jesus? In the same way in which Jesus came to us: through the Immaculate. In this episode, Dr. Miravalle discusses this observation of St. Kolbe & how grace descends to us from the mediation of the Mother of God.
Marycast Specials #55 (10min) Play – St. Maximilian, martyr of charity & fool of love for the Immaculate, was also a gifted theologian & mariologist, and in this episode Dr. Miravalle discusses his unique contribution regarding the role of the Holy Spirit & Our Lady.
Marycast Specials #56 (10min) Play – St. Maximilian Kolbe describes the Holy Spirit as “the Uncreated Immaculate Conception,” and he also describes Our Lady as the “Created Immaculate Conception.” What can we say in regards to their union as expressed in the Incarnation of the God-man? In this episode, Dr. Miravalle continues to discuss these profound insights offered to us by the Apostle of the Marian Era.
