Oct 01 – Homily – Fr Ignatius: St. Theresa of the Child Jesus

Homily #101001 ( 07min) Play – Today is the feast day of St Therese of Lisieux of the Child Jesus. Fr. Ignatius celebrates this in the Extraordinary Form as a votive Mass since her feast day is on the 3rd of October in the old calender. He preaches on St. Therese’s life who through the help of her very devout parents was given a very good start on the road to sanctity. He describes how even though she was an almost entirely unknown nun who died at the young age of 24 in a cloistered convent, her great sanctity was discovered by the outside world and she was Canonized as a saint, made a patron of missionaries throughout the world, declared a doctor of the Church and virtually every Catholic Church has set-up a statue of her.

Sep 18 – Homily – Fr Bonaventure: The Flying Saint

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

Homily #100918 ( 06min) Play – On this Feast of St. Joseph Cupertino Fr. Bonaventure preaches on the firm basis on which this saint flew to the heights of sanctity. He did not have much to offer society in regard to worldly, natural ability but he would never be discouraged but continue on in humility and this lowliness lead to his sanctity that was so extraordinarily manifested in the gift of physical flight. Father also exhorts us to reject the modern eugenics movement in the form of abortion and infanticide of babies that are not deemed perfectly formed, useful or convenient like St. Joseph.

A Franciscan Saint of the Confessional

Friday, July 30th, 2010

 Ave Maria Meditations encore

St. Leopoldo Mandic is known as an Apostle of the Confessional and also as an Apostle of Unity. Feast Day is July 30th.

 st leopoldo

SAINT OF THE CONFESSIONAL

To be a good confessor one must first of all gain the confidence of the penitent. In this Fr. Leopoldo succeeded wonderfully. His very person, so small as to be scarcely visible in the semi-darkness of cell, his features calm and radiating kindness, his eyes full of serenity, his measured and paternal gestures, all combined to awake confidence from all who approached. Often he would get up and go to meet the penitent as if he were greeting an old and expected friend.

Nothing he did or said could in any way humiliate the visitor and cause him to close his heart. He paid attention to everything, knowing that confidence is built on a variety of imponderables which may often appear insignificant. So much skill and so much virtue naturally disposed the penitent to listen with a receptive mind to the instruction and exhortations which followed. What he said was not just a routine affair, the same for everyone; he said what was needed by each individual soul in a manner easily understood by the person in question, using dialect and popular phrases if they would help. This was a point he considered very important.  (more…)

Franciscan Doctor of the Church: St. Lawrence of Brindisi

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

One Minute Meditations

St. Lawrence of Brindisi (1559-1619) Feast Day is July 21st

God is love, and all his operations proceed from love. Once he wills to manifest that goodness by sharing his love outside himself, then the Incarnation becomes the supreme manifestation of his goodness and love and glory. So, Christ was intended before all other creatures and for his own sake. For him all things were created and to him all things must be subject, and God loves all creatures in and because of Christ. Christ is the first-born of every creature, and the whole of humanity as well as the created world finds its foundation and meaning in him. Moreover, this would have been the case even if Adam had not sinned”

(St. Lawrence of Brindisi, Doctor of the Universal Church, Capuchin Educational Conference, Washington, D.C.).
