Ave Maria!

This past Corpus Christi the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate in Rome had the privilege of attending the Eucharistic  procession of our Holy Father.  The procession started at the basilica of St. John Lateran and finished at the basilica of St. Mary Major.  We hope you enjoy some of the highlights of our special evening, which includes audio from the Holy Mass celebrated beforehand by the Pope as well as audio of the Vatican choir which beautifully animated the procession and the Eucharistic benediction.  The video contains text in English and in Italian.

Variety #161 – Feast of Our Lady of Nazareth, Rome, Italy ( 14min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!

Here’s a glimpse of the procession that was held on the outskirts of Rome for the feast of “Holy Mary of Nazareth” parish, one of the parishes that our Franciscan Friars have care of here in Italy. We’ve added to the footage a few reflections from the book Devotion to Mary, written by our founder, Father Stefano M. Manelli, to add some depth and reflection to this short, catholic-culture film. Included are also some piano pieces played by Sister Maria Settima Manelli, a hymn or two from our Friars, and also some faint but beautiful hymns taken from the monastery of our contemplative Franciscan Sisters here in Italy at Città di Castello.

Variety #105 – Cardinal Burke ( 17min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!
In his homily, Cardinal Burke focused on the need for beauty and splendor in the sacred liturgy, echoing what His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI wrote in the letter accompanying his Moto Proprio “Summorum Pontificum:” “It is not appropriate to speak of these two versions of the Roman Missal as if they were ‘two Rites’.  Rather, it is a matter of a twofold use of one and the same rite.” And “What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful.  It behooves all of us to preserve the riches which have developed in the Church’s faith and prayer, and to give them their proper place…”

Fi News – Pontifical High Mass with Cardinal Burke

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

On Sunday, December 26th, His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke offered a Pontifical Solemn High Mass at the Seminary of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate in Rome. The Mass was offered in honor of Fr. Stefano Maria Manelli, being his patronal feast day, and in thanksgiving for the elevation of His Eminence to the Cardinalate. The Mass was sung by the combined choirs of the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Immaculate from various convents of the F.I. in Italy, and was conducted by Sr. Maria Cecilia Manelli and Fr. Giovanni Maria Manelli – resulting in an outstanding example of the magnificence the Mass is meant to have. The Friars and Sisters also had the honor of hosting His Excellency Bishop Gino Reali of the local diocese of Porto-Santa Rufino, Rome.

Conferences #93 – Fr James McCurry opens the Newman-Scotus Symposium ( 11min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!

Fr James McCurry gives an inspirational welcome and introduction to the Newman-Scotus Symposium at the Washington Theological Union on Oct 22, 2010. He reads a warm letter of encouragement from Friar Marco Tasca, OFM Conv., the Minster General of the Conventual Franciscans from Rome, asking the participants to energetically uncover, for all the world to see, the common intellectual treasure that these two holy and eminent British scholars share, centered on the Absolute Primacy of Christ and the primacy of Love. He reflects on the Pope’s words at the very recent beatification of Newman in Birmingham, England where he mentions Newman’s  motto “Cor ad Cor Loquitor“, “Heart speaks unto Heart” where God and man speak heart to heart. Fr. McCurry mentions the equivalent starting point for Scotus’ theology where “God wills to love. God wills to be loved. God willed to have co-lovers of himself” and so he created the world and man with the goal of the incarnation via Mary Immaculate. He ends by reciting a prayer to Our Lady written by Bl. John Cardinal Newman to give us protection and the purity of heart and mind to be good and wise Christians.

Variety #94 – Bsp. Bruskewitz of Lincoln, Nebraska ( 14min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!

Fr. Elias Mills of our Bloomington, Indiana friary recently interviewed the renowned Bishop Bruskewitz of Lincoln, Nebraska on current issues of faith and Church in America.  We are posting them here in a five part series. In the first part, in answering Fr. Elias questions, the bishop relates his thoughts about:

  • His 50 years as a priest and bishop in the Church and all the changes and events in the time.
  • His visits to shrines in Europe and Rome.
  • His 19 years as Bishop of Lincoln.
  • The graces that are ever needed for his office
  • His work with John Paul II and Benedict XVI
  • What these two papacies have done for the Church especially the continuity that they reaffirmed between the post and pre-Vatican II Church
  • The Moto Proprio of Pope Benedict and how it is not at all against Vatican II
  • The unlikelihood of a mixture of the Ordinary and Extraordinary Forms of the liturgy
  • New English translation of the Ordinary Form of the Liturgy
  • How well Catechisis has been carried out in the Post Vatican II era
  • balance needed between doctrine and pastoral and social concerns

Listening to Bsp. Bruskewitz’s clear  insights and answers is refreshing indeed.

His Eminence Luis Cardinal Aponte Martinez, Archbishop Emeritus, San Juan, Puerto Rico

His Excellency Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, Prefect, Apostolic Signatura, Rome

Congratulations to Archbishop Raymond Burke

Thursday, July 29th, 2010
Ave Maria!
Congratulations to Archbishop Raymond Burke for his appointment as a member of the Congregation of the Causes of Saints.
Diane at Te Deum Laudamus and her commenters has compiled a list of the many responsibilities given to Bishop Burke since going to Rome. Here is the list:
The story was also picked up by Patrick Madrid and Thomas Peters both of whom agree with Diane that this flies in the face of some dissenting Catholics who suggest that he was moved to Rome to silence his orthodox views.  Not only is this not the case but he is a prime candidate for Cardinal.
La Crosse – Marian Symposium
If you wish to congratulate him personally on his latest appointment, he will be coming on August 21st to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, WI  which he was instrumental in having built while he was the bishop there. The occasion will be the 2010 Marian Symposium, MARY: COREDEMPTRIX, MEDIATRIX, ADVOCATE presented by the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, the  Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Vox Populi Mariae Mediatrici:

MaryCast Specials #68 ( 08min) Play – Dr. Mark Miravalle gives a synopsis of the events on March 25 in Rome as many theologians and bishops and even Cardinals  gathered for the Roman Forum sponsored by Inside the Vatican to discuss how opportune the time might be for the proclamation of the 5th Marian Dogma. The panel was unanimous in its conviction that now is the opportune time for the declaration especially as an antidote to the current crisis that seems to be a full out attack on the Church.
