Ave Maria!

The Franciscans of the Immaculate in New Bedford, Massachusetts have launched the first Catholic radio station in the Diocese of Fall River. Like our other station in Up-State New york the content of the radio is a feed from EWTN, but over time, little by little, we’ll produce our own content.

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — After more than two years of planning, preparing and fund-raising, the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate based at Our Lady’s Chapel in downtown New Bedford are ready to launch the first-ever 24-hour Catholic radio station in the Fall River Diocese.

On Friday WPMW — also known as Radio CorMariae — will make its official debut at the 88.5 frequency on the FM dial.

Operated by the Franciscan Friars in collaboration with the congregation’s lay apostolate, the Mission of the Immaculate Mediatrix, the new Radio CorMariae has secured the necessary licensing from the Federal Communications Commission for what is known as a “micro-FM” radio station and will broadcast within a limited range from Westport to Fairhaven within the greater New Bedford area. Studio

by friar John Mary

We are pleased to show the looks of the new studio built for Radio CorMariae. After months of day after day work, corresponding to upwards of a thousand man hours, the studio is just about ready for use.

Immaculate Heart statue shrine in studioWe are continuing to wire the final components in the two rooms: one main studio for the board operator along with interview personnel and another room for the production work on the audio files.

Most of the equipment is new, although the console, one of the most important pieces of equipment, is nearly a couple generations old.We are able to use this older console for now as we are learning to crawl in our radio station adventure. For now we are happy to use this one, not to mention the price is right ($0), but later, when we get into some heavy production work, we will need to buy a more state-of-the-art piece of equipment. Without even looking at digital ones, the still-in-use analog consoles start in the range of $5,000 to $13,000.

The Birthday of WPMW, Radio CorMariae, 88.5 FM, New Bedord MASS

Friday, December 17th, 2010

Ave Maria!

Yesterday, 16 December 2010, was the unofficial birthday of Radio CorMariae. At around 5:30pm we jerry-rigged the newly installed antenna line, connected it up to the transmitter, and fired up the radio station for the first time. It was an incredibly joyful event as this was the culmination of over 2 years of hard work by a huge team of volunteers to get this radio station up and running – and we, the privileged few, got to enjoy the fruit of all that hard work – if only for a brief period of time.

Don’t get excited and tune in your radio to 88.5 FM yet! This was only our first test transmission and there is still a lot of technical and engineering work to be completed before we can go on the air full-time. Our official launch date is set for 25 March 2011.

A picture tells a thousand words:

All hands on deck to assemble the antenna.

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

Ave Maria! Linda Andrade Rodrigues of South Coast Today (online version of New Bedford’s Standard Times) published an article about us today, St. Maximilian Kolbe’s Feast Day. She had many kind words about us and Mother Teresa’s Order in New Bedford. We will have to explain to her,  though, that we are not quite ready for canonization. Thanks, Linda!

NEW BEDFORD — Trappist monk and author Thomas Merton wrote, “Oh my God! You see what a barren and desolate place this world is —- send us saints!”

The answer to his prayers, our city is blessed by the good works of saints.

Walk along our streets, and you’ll see Mother Teresa’s nuns in their white and striped-blue habits, ministering in our neighborhoods.

Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta sent her order, the Missionaries of Charity, to New Bedford, and on June 14, 1995, she visited the city, worshipped at the Church of St. Lawrence Martyr and touched the lives of countless SouthCoast residents.

Dressed in simple gray robes with sandaled feet, the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate reach out to this city’s homeless and forgotten, and offer spiritual guidance to a constant stream of strangers who wander through the doors of Our Lady’s Chapel in downtown New Bedford. More …

FiNews – AirMaria Update

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

airmaria-logo-complete.jpg

Ave Maria!

Well we’ve been very busy here at AirMaria. However, we admit that it has not always been directly posting videos as can be seen from a sparse period in our posting when we got behind on many of our video projects. But we have completed many of the side projects that were holding us back and we’re making up for lost time as you can see by by our many videos in the past week.

We have also gotten behind on fund raising and our budget is showing the strain. We are currently a few hundred dollars in the red and have several operating expenses coming up and there are several capital expenses that we need to make, including essential things like expanded storage. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Administration System

One big side project was our new administration system which is entirely behind the scenes of AirMaria but was essential to handle the growing number of videos which was getting too large to handle on Google Docs. It allows people to contribute from anywhere on the globe and provides many automation features that simplifies the production and publishing of videos especially the homilies. The system is currently online and operational and will be undergoing much fine tuning and many more features will be added.

Friar Augustine Marie gives an overview of the six Non-Commercial FM stations that the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate have applied for in the United States. This presentation was given during the WPMW Radio CorMariae Fund Raising Dinner in October.

Friar Augustine is on temporary assignment to the Mt St Francis Hermitage in Maine, NY where he is currently working on getting their radio station, WHVM Holy Virgin Mary Radio, up and running.

Let us pray that God will abundantly bless this radio apostolate that will change the communities in which they are broadcasting.

Steven Gajdosik, president of Catholic Radio Association:

The Catholic Radio Association was founded in 1999 to serve as the trade association for Catholic radio. As such, the CRA works to advance the cause of Catholic radio by providing member services, facilitating the sharing of knowledge and resources, and speaking with one voice for its members. The Association’s membership includes virtually all Catholic radio apostolates in the country, Catholic radio program providers, the USCCB, and several (arch)dioceses.

By uniting all involved in Catholic radio, the CRA provides a forum for those already working in Catholic radio to share with and mentor those that Our Lord has just recently called to the mission of Catholic radio. The CRA also provides a means of networking with, and marketing to, those involved in Catholic radio.
