Ave Maria!
In his homily, Cardinal Burke focused on the need for beauty and splendor in the sacred liturgy, echoing what His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI wrote in the letter accompanying his Moto Proprio “Summorum Pontificum:” “It is not appropriate to speak of these two versions of the Roman Missal as if they were ‘two Rites’. Rather, it is a matter of a twofold use of one and the same rite.” And “What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful. It behooves all of us to preserve the riches which have developed in the Church’s faith and prayer, and to give them their proper place…”

Homily #101010 (39min) Play – The Gospel of today has the cleansing of the ten lepers and how only one came back to give thanks, a Samaritan, a stranger. Father points out that this event takes place in Samaria on the way from Philippi, famous for its temple to the Pagan god Pan which was considered to be the gates to the netherworld. The form of worship of this God was so outrageous that you could really call it pan-demonium. But it is also where Jesus gives the keys of the kingdom of God to Peter (Mat 16:18) against which these gates of hell will not prevail. He connects these biblical events with modern forms of pandemonium including rock music, materialistic culture, sexual immorality, political acquiescence to evil, public blasphemy, replacing Jesus the true savior with human gods. We have been forgiven by Christ, cleansed from the leprosy of sin. Let us not be ungrateful like the other nine lepers but be like that one stranger who returns to give thanks to Christ our Savior. Let us not only do this as individuals but as a people and as whole nations, coming back to the Church that Jesus built on the rock of Peter.

In ieiunio et fletu orabant sacerdotes: parce Domine populo tuo, et ne des hereditatem tuam in perditionem. Inter vestibulum et altare plorabant sacerdotes dicentes: Parce populo tuo.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Fasting and weeping, the priests shall pray: Spare thy people, Lord, and give not thy heritage over to destruction. Between the porch and altar, the priests shall pray: Spare thy people. Hear my prayer, O Lord
and let my crying come unto thee.
Derelinquit impius viam suam, et vir iniquus cogitationes suas, et reveratur ad Dominum, et miserebitur eius: quia benignus at misericors est, et praestabilis super malitia, Dominus Deus noster.
The wicked man forsakes his ways, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him: for the Lord our God is gracious and merciful, and ever ready to relent when he threatens disaster.
Ave Maria! This one is by the FI’s in Italy about their “Field School” that they hold each year with youth in the majestic Italian Alps. The beautiful footage is set to music with Italian titles. Perhaps we will come up with a version with English titles, but really, the imagery says it all. Part 2 will be tomorrow.
