Ave Maria! Quite a story by Fr. Zuhlsdorf on the intercession of Juan Diego, the very Marian saint of the Americas.
Yesterday’s feast got me thinking about St. Juan Diego, of Our Lady of Guadalupe fame.
Under normal circumstances, for a beatification there must be a miracle which has been rigorously studied and approved by the Congregation for Causes and Saints accepted by the Holy Father. In the case of Juan Diego, John Paul II decided to beatify him without the approved miracle. He had been declared Venerable in 1987.
There was a miracle for his canonization, however. And it is quite a story.
Homily #101127 (13min) Play – Today the FI’s celebrate the feast of the Miraculous Medal. We have the Gospel account of the Miracle at Cana performed by our Lord at the instigation of Mary, His mother. Fr. Bonaventure explains the historical background of the apparition of Rue de Bac, occurring in the anti-religious aftermath of the French Revolution. In the apparition, Our Lady asked for the Immaculate Conception Medal to be struck. This medal became associated with so many miracles that it soon became known as the Miraculous Medal. These miracles are preformed by God but through the prayers of Mary just as it happened in Cana two millennia ago, which resulted in the strengthening of the faith of the disciples. St Maximilian, one of the FI’s Patron Saints called these medals “bullets” because they were so good at bringing about conversions.

Today Fr Bonaventure preaches on the life of St Pio of Pietrelcina more commonly known as St. Padre Pio a Capuchin priest who is a modern example of a miracle worker who died in 1968. Father enumerates some of the miraculous events and gifts that Padre Pio had and describes his life as one great miracle since he lived almost a supernatural life. The Franciscans of the Immaculate celebrate this Mass as a Solemnity since he is one of our patron saints. Fr Stefano, our founder, is a spiritual directee of Padre Pio.

Homily #100207 (14min) Play – In today’s Gospel we see St. Peter being Peter, that is, he has the best of intentions and yet is very imperfect in carrying them out. He wants to obey when Our Lord asks him to set out for the deep in his boat, and does, but he complains first, only to see how unworthy he is when Our Lord manifests his holiness with the miracle of the great catch of fish. Fr Angelo compares this to the first reading of Isaiah where Isaiah sees the holiness of God and knows he is unworthy to be His messenger and the need for God’s gift of sanctification to be made worthy.

Homily #100117 (24min) Play – The Gospel today is the account of the miracle at the marriage feast of Cana where Jesus turns water into wine at the request of His mother. Father explains how this passage is not a disparagement of His mother as some would say, but is, in fact, a great honoring of her as Jesus performs his first miracle in the context of a marriage and so underscores the importance of motherhood and family as the best remedy to our modern secular problems.

Homily #091115 (10min) Play – Fr. Ignatius explains the parable in today’s Gospel of how the Kingdom of God is like a muster seed that grows into into the largest of bushes. This miracle of growth from the tiniest of seeds occurred by the action of God in the form of miracles and also by the action of men in the witness they gave by practicing their faith to a heroic degree. God is still performing miracles. Are we doing our part?
