Homily #101225s ( 18min) Play – On this day when we celebrate the birth of our dear Savior, Fr. Dominic preaches the Gospel message of the coming of Christ that is so well put in the broadest historical sense by St John the Evangelist. Father focuses on the mysterious truth of this coming. Mysterious because the most glorious all-mighty God comes to us as such a humble baby, laid in a manger, but nevertheless the stupendous truth that captures the eminent mercy and love or our God. This mercy and love is so fitting to God’s greatness that it silences all objections to this mystery.

The keynote address for Newman-Scotus Symposium the is given by Sr. Mary Beth Ingham who advocates for a shift of our concept of rational activity from an intellectual centrality to that of the will along the lines of  Scotus who is the most famous of the Franciscan masters.

Notes:

Anselm comodi and justistia two desires of our rational self. Comodi for personal health, happiness. Justisia is a desire for justice, good for goodness itself. both of these things need to be pursued. Bonaventure explains that the main problem that Our Lord was trying to correct was wrong motives. The Pharisees were motivated by this worldly concerns but we all need to do everything out of love for God.

Homily #100905 ( 35 min) Play – In today’s Gospel Our Lord tells us that we must love Him above all things and be well prepared in our engagement with the world. He tells us this in the form of two parables, the building of the tower and the king who contemplates going into battle. Fr. Bonaventure explains this in the context of Catholic action, where our preparation consists in building up our love of, and trust in, God who has forces vastly stronger than the enemy and that action starts with prayer and contemplation and only secondarily with physical action. Father also outlines the many ways that we are in true, open and explicit battle with the modern culture and philosophy, always relating it back to its spiritual nature.
