Bonaventure on the Gospel message “This I command you, Love one another as I love you.” He reflects that following God’s commandments is the way to love Him and so abide in His love and so be able to love ones neighbor. There is no opposition between love and the law for love fulfills the law and obeying the law fulfills love. This is what Jesus did on the Cross for all of us.

This meant loving them them to the point of giving up His life for them. This sacrifice come about by the very lack of love of Judas. But even this great scandal in the infant Church was used to further the Divine plan as His death won the graces the Church needed to elect Matthias to replace Jesus and then go and teach all nations. Let us take courage, then, in this age of scandal.
