Recognizing who one really is before God, practicing the virtue of humility to discern the truth in every situation, and receiving sanctifying grace through the Sacrament of Confession. Jesus commands us to study and imitate His humility and He gives us an example of humility throughout His whole life which motivated His apostles to imitate Him and to be faithful to their mission.

On Acquiring Humility

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Ave Maria Meditations

Ways of acquiring this virtue of humility:

Among the ways of attaining humility is, in the first place, ardently to desire it, to value it and to ask God for it. Then our aim should be to foster docility-in resolutely carrying out the advice received in spiritual direction, to receive fraternal correction joyfully and thankfully, to accept humiliation in silence for love of God, to obey quickly and wholeheartedly and, above all, to strive to attain this precious virtue through the exercise of charity in continual details of cheerful service to others. Jesus is the supreme example of humility. No one has ever had a dignity comparable to his and no one has ever served mankind with such tender care as He: I am among you as one who serves.

If we imitate Our Lord, we will accept others as they are and pay no attention to all those little annoyances which; in themselves, are of little importance. Humility disposes us to patience, and helps us to be patient with our own defects and with the defects of the people around us. We will render many little services in the course of our daily lives without expecting anything in exchange; and we will learn from Jesus and Mary how to get along with everyone and to understand other people, defects and all. If we try to see others as Our Lord sees them, it will be easy to accept them as he accepts them. (more…)

School of Mary – Day #5: Hiddenness

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Day #5: Hiddenness

MARY: Do you know what is the real cause of the life and the beauty of a flower? … You see its brilliant shades, smell its delicate fragrance and yet you don’t recognize that all of this buds forth from those humble roots which are hidden in the barren and often muddy earth. It is the humble earth that secures the vital part of a flower and in it that the roots are hidden and these cannot give life to the flower if they are not hidden! Virtue is always born from an intimate and profound hiddenness! Flowers must certainly be seen for Jesus says: “Let your good deeds be seen by others”, but the seeds from which they bud, the life of the heart must remain concealed and hidden.

How many times do you not love to appear virtuous before those who see you and seek the vain praise of others’ Then you remove the root from being hidden, it unhappily dries up and also the flower wilts and dies. The paid gardener cuts the flower and ties it to an artificial stem so that it may be admired … but in doing this he kills it! When you seek human praise, you cut the flower of virtue and you place it on an artificial stem … After empty praise it is nothing more than a mass of withered leaves. Therefore love hiddenness and desire that only God sees you and reads the secret of your heart.

THE SOUL: O Mary, open your humble Heart to me as a refuge so that I may hide myself in it! Human
praise disturbs me, agitates me, makes me so ugly and I recognize that I get worse after praise. I?m full of pride and I can?t free myself of it except by hiding myself in God! O Mary, give me the strength to flee human praise and my vanity!

ASPIRATION: O Mary, give me humility of heart.

LITTLE WORK: When something redounds to your praise, don?t say it for the love of holy humility.

Jan 02 – Homily – Fr Angelo: Humility of the Magi

Homily #110102s ( 10min) Play – Fr. Angelo has the second Mass for today which is a special Mass for the drawing of the Epiphany Cards that takes place after Mass. It also the occasion of the unveiling of our new icon for our Pro-life Shine which is Our Lady Helper in Childbirth that has an ancient tradition attached to it. Fr. Angelo preaches on how it is important to focus on the three Magi because they were coming to Christ, the source of light, from the darkness of their paganism. This display of humility (to look beyond what they were masters of) should be imitated by us modern men who are such masters of science and so move from our new paganism to find the true light.

Thoughts on Humility

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Ave Maria Meditations

The active nature of humility:

In the account of the life of Saint Anthony, Abbot, it is said that God showed him the world beset with the snares the devil had prepared to entrap men. Following the vision, the saint was filled with fear, and asked, Lord, who can escape so many snares? And he heard a voice that answered, Anthony, he who is humble can escape, for God gives his grace to the humble, but the proud fall into all the traps the devil sets. Yet the devil does not dare to attack the humble man.

If we want to serve the Lord, we must desire ask for the virtue of humility with insistence. To truly desire this virtue, we should keep in mind that the opposite of humility – the capital sin of pride – is the greatest obstacle to the vocation we have received from the Lord. It is what harms family life and friendship, what opposes our true happiness most of all. It is the devil’s foremost ally in our soul, with which he tries to undo the work that the Holy Spirit is constantly carrying out. (more…)
