Ave Maria!
Lecture 5 of the Newman-Scotus Symposium is by Rev. Dr. Fehlner: Scotus and Newman in Dialogue: Examples of Scotistic Affinities in Newman, the Will, the Critical Question (of Interiorization) and Faith
Fr. Peter first comments on Dr. Noone’s last talk that Newman and Scotus disagrees with each other on process of assent. But this is not the starting point. Going to God given the differences is difficulty. Scotus term simplicite simplex, Perfect being, that is God and so radically different. But they have a common starting point in their Christology and Mariology.
Fr. Peter mentions:
- Key is to find where Newman fits in the Franciscan view (more…)

Homily #101127 ( 13min) Play – Today the FI’s celebrate the feast of the Miraculous Medal. We have the Gospel account of the Miracle at Cana performed by our Lord at the instigation of Mary, His mother. Fr. Bonaventure explains the historical background of the apparition of Rue de Bac, occurring in the anti-religious aftermath of the French Revolution. In the apparition, Our Lady asked for the Immaculate Conception Medal to be struck. This medal became associated with so many miracles that it soon became known as the Miraculous Medal. These miracles are preformed by God but through the prayers of Mary just as it happened in Cana two millennia ago, which resulted in the strengthening of the faith of the disciples. St Maximilian, one of the FI’s Patron Saints called these medals “bullets” because they were so good at bringing about conversions.

Ave Maria!
Newman-Scotus Symposium – What is meant by Heart in Scotus, Bonaventure and the Franciscan tradition? Fr. Peter answers this question. Heart in Augustine really means the essence of a person. And this is used very similarly in Bonaventure in the Itinerarium with the interiorization. Father goes into considerable detail outlining the use of the world by Augustine, Bonaventure, Francis de Sales, Aquinas, and generally in the Franciscan school. He points out that the Franciscans make a strong distinction between doctrine and spirituality. St.Margaret Mary Alaquoqe, St. John Eudes, Two Hearts and Sacred Hearts which is related to the Church which is from Duns Scotus. He relates this to Scotus’ teaching of the absolute primacy of Christ. The devotion to the hearts of Jesus and Mary popularizes the scotistic teaching.

Recording Failed - In today’s Gospel Our Lord brings salvation to Zacheus of Jericho. Fr. Bonaventure preaches on how Jericho is a symbol of sinfulness that has been conquered by Christ’s presence. This place was one of the most ancient cities in the world and was the lowest place below sea level that is inhabited by man and so is a symbol of Hell. The citizens were devotees of the lunar deities and practiced the associated vices, ones that would cause people to loose their mind, becoming literally lunatics. He connects this with the culture of modern decadent cities using Chapter 2 of the Book of Wisdom and how Christ is needed just as before for bringing the Kingdom of God to these bastions of Satan.

Ave Maria!
For the 4th talk in our symposium “Mother of the Church” on Marian Coredemption in the National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, La Crosse, Wisconsin on August 21, 2010, Archbishop Raymond Burke, the founder of the shrine and Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, gives a talk “Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of the Church”. Abp. Burke talks on Mary as Mother of the Church in light of the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe by examining the Nican Mopohua which is the most scholarly and earliest written account of the apparition composed from1540 to 1545 (very soon after the apparitions) by the Aztec noble Antonio Volariano. He then compares this to the theological reflections of St. Bonaventure on the nature of the Church and Our Lady’s involvement in it.
Drew Mariani of Relevant Radio was MC of the symposium.
