Ave Maria! The friars had a bushfire not far from their Perth friary on March 13, 2011. It looked really bad at first, but it was on the other side of a limestone quarry in a native bush parkland area surrounded by firefighters. If the wind changed direction, or the fire managed to get around the quarry, then we might have a repeat of last year’s fire. Fortunately, the firefighters kept the perimeter of the fire under control and pretty much let the interior burn. Planes and helicopters dropped water on the fire all day and just before evening it was put out. +++ |

Ave Maria! Friar Gabriel Cortes continues his story from last episode where he related his conversion story. Now he covers his ministry work in the land down under, Australia. He first fills in the details of his conversion and then relates his experience of being in Toodyay and Perth, Australia for ten years. He covers his ministry with the youth where he uses his skill at skateboarding to break the ice. He has been able to start many conversations with the youth and even win the friendship of whole neighborhoods of kids. Fra Gabriel Cortes, FI is skateboarding his way across Australia. Well, not really, but he is packing his skateboard with him on a plane trip from Perth where he’s stationed on the west coast of Australia to Sydney on the east coast to attend an Archdiocesan follow up event to the Pope’s visit there for the World Youthday 2008. The Archdiocese of Sydney’s newspaper has a great article on him and on the FI’s here. |
In the afternoon of March 1st, 2010 a bushfire started near the friary in Perth, Australia and grew quickly. It jumped the main road and approached our backyard. We decided to evacuate the friary. We took the Blessed Sacrament, a few liturgical items of worth, a few personal items (passports, etc.) and the computers and loaded up the cars. We turned on the lawn sprinklers on the side facing the fire, closed all windows and doors, placed a statue of Our Lady to watch over the fire and drove down the road to a safe distance to wait it out. Roads were blocked by the police. After noticing that the smoke in the immediate area of the friary had died down and after the police told us the friary was ok, we went to a benefactor’s house for something to eat and drink only to be allowed back onto the property around 10:00pm. Damage was limited to a few sheds in the area, no homes or loss of life but about 47 hectares (115 acres) burned.

Ave Maria! Fr. Joseph Michael went on this 50km procession from St. Michael’s Cathedral in Wagga Wagga, NSW, Australia to the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Marian Hills, Tarcutta, NSW. He was the chaplain (and cameraman) to this group of approximately 70 Catholics of various ages. The journey was spread over the course of several days, camping along the way. |
Ave Maria! The Friars in Australia led a weekend Men’s Lenten Retreat in Borden, WA, complete with talks, Liturgy of the Hours and Holy Mass. The “highpoint” of the retreat was the hike up Bluff Knoll (elev. 1095m) where we enjoyed the view and celebrated Holy Mass – likely the first time Holy Mass was ever celebrated up there! |
