Homily #120524 ( 09min) Play – Fr. Angelo preaches on the Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Francis and although St Francis did not build this church he was called by Our Lord from the St. Damiano Cross to rebuild His Church which He said was in great need of repair. Fr. Angelo preaches on this fact and that the chapel building St. Francis was in was, in fact, physically falling down and how he took this at first as meaning to rebuild church buildings. But he soon realized that it was a call to renew the entire Church of Christ and it is this work which he did so successfully that resulted in the construction of the Basilica in his memory.

He does this because He was about to leave them as far as a visible presence in concerned by being crucified for our sins. Then He was Resurrected and Ascended into heaven but promised that He would send the Holy Spirit who will give them the needed graces. So they prayed for the coming of the Comforter in the upper room for nine days completing the first novena of prayer.

Angelo preaches on the Apostolic succession of the bishops that constitutes the Apostolicity of the Church, one of the four marks of the Church to recognize the true Church. As any bishop lays hands on a new bishop they pass on what they have received from their successor and this goes back to the Apostles handing on what Jesus Himself gave to them and is the key to how Jesus fulfills His promise that the Holy Spirit will always be with His Church. This is a great assurance and source of Hope. Let us rejoice in it and give thanks to God.

This fits since it is also the feast day of St. Athanasius who is called “Athanasius against the world” becsuse he upheld the doctrine of the Incarnation in the face of opposition from all the Arian heritics of whom so many of his fellow bishops where included due to the influence of the powerful Arian emperor.
