Oct 31 – Homily – Fr Matthias: The Dual Purpose of Law

Friday, October 31st, 2014
Click to Play

Homily #141031n ( 05min) Play – In today’s Gospel, Father tells us it shows the dual purpose of God’s Laws: first, to show the majesty and glory of God, and, second, to benefit us, show us how to live, and lead us to God. The Pharisees missed these points, and insisted on legalistic observance of the Law while also constraining it to external acts. This is what St. Paul meant when he said, “The letter kills, but the spirit gives life. We need to understand that our world also has lost this understanding of God’s Laws, and it will only be convinced by seeing us live it out in joy, love, and self-sacrifice, and by that good example, come to know the goodness of God.

Oct 29 – Homily – Fr Alan: Possibility not Probability

Homily #141029b ( 10min) Play – Fr. Alan on the Gospel message that only a few will be saved and that we must strive to enter the narrow gate. He says we must not focus so much on probability, as if it is a blind  lottery with a slim chance of winning, but rather on the need to strive to enter, knowing that is is difficult and thus needs effort, but is nevertheless possible. This effort should be focused on becoming humble and childlike in the eyes of God, asking for His grace which was won on the Cross, and this requires the greatest effort all.

Oct 28 – Homily – Fr Maximilian W: Apostolos

Tuesday, October 28th, 2014

Homily #141028n ( 04min) Play – Father comments on the Gospel of today, telling us that the word “Apostle” comes from the greek “apostolos” meaning “sent.” At Our Lord’s Ascension, He sent out the apostles to the world, and made them the 12 pillars on which the Church was founded. Although we know little of today’s apostles, we do know they preached the Gospel to the pagans, and testified to it with their lives. Like them, we must first come to know the Lord intimately, and then spread what we encounter there out to the rest of the world by our voices and our lives.

Oct 26 – Homily – Fr Alan: The Old and the New

Monday, October 27th, 2014

Homily #141026b ( 17min) Play – New remains hidden in the old. And the old is revealed in the new. Fr. Alan explains this in the context of today readings where Jesus responds to the Pharisees with, You shall love your God as … and your neighbor as yourself. These are all related by the analogy of faith where the Old Testament is related to the New and the justice of God is related to the love and mercy of God and the Love we should have for God is related to what we should have for our neighbor.

Oct 26 – Homily – Fr Maximilian W: Love Grows From Prayer

Sunday, October 26th, 2014

Homily #141026n ( 10min) Play – In today’s Gospel, our Lord summarizes the 10 Commandments, which make more explicit how we live out the call to love God and our Neighbor. Father emphasizes that love of neighbor flows out of love of God, and this love grows through prayer. Therefore, to fulfill “all the Law and Prophets,” we need to pray and live that prayer out in love for God and for our neighbor.
