Ave Maria!

I must confess, I don’t even know which house of ours this is from, but I assume it is from one in Italy. Fr. Elias here at Bloomington gave me the tip. It features the acrobatic culinary talent of Fra Christophe Mary Rebbaccai who was a champion exhibition pizza maker in his former life and apparently has not lost his touch. I didn’t see him drop it once. His brother who is also a friar, Fra Simon Pier Mary Rebbaccai, also makes an appearance at the end to demonstrate some teamwork and that the talent runs in the family. I’ll take pepperoni! Mangia! And wash those habits!

FiNews – Fr. Peter Wins Card. John J. Wright Mariological Award

Wednesday, March 4th, 2015

Ave Maria!

We wish to give our hearty congratulations to our very own Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner as we announce that he has been accorded the prestigious Cardinal John J. Wright Award of the Mariological Society of America for his outstanding contributions to Mariology.

FrPeterFehlner

The Mariological Society of America (MSA) is a Catholic theological association dedicated to studying and making known the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the mystery of Christ and in the Church and in the history of salvation.  Through its annual meeting and in its publication, Marian Studies, the Society seeks to promote original research in Marian doctrine and devotion.

The Cardinal John J. Wright Mariological Award is conferred in memory of Cardinal Wright, long-time member of the MSA and its Episcopal chairman from 1951 until his death in 1979.  As defined by the Board of Directors in 1991, the award is given, upon recommendation of a designated three-member committee, to recognize and encourage significant publications on the Virgin Mary.  Its recipient need not be a member of the MSA.

Past recipients of the Mariological Award include Juniper B. Carol, O.F.M. (1951); Wenceslaus Sebastian, O.E.M. (1952); Lawrence W. Monheim, S.M. (1953); Stanley Maruzewski, M.S. (1954); Bernard Le Frois, S. V. D. (1955); Dominic J. Unger, O.F.M. Cap. (1956); Cyril Vollert, S.J. (1957); Walter J. Burghardt, S.J. (1958); Eamon R. Carroll, O.Carm. (1959); William G. Most (1960); George W. Shea (1961); Edward D. O’Connor, C.S.C. (1962); Kenneth E Dougherty, S.A. (1966); Ovidio Casado Fuente (1966); Charles W. Neumann, S.M. (1967); Cletus J. Wessels, O.P. (1968); John E Craghan, C.Ss.R. (1971); Theodore A. Koehler, S.M. (1973); Manuel Miguens, O.F.M. (1975); William H. Marshner (1979); Roger M. Charest, S.M.M. (1983); James T. O’Connor (1986); Alfred Boeddeker, O.F.M. (1989); Nicholas Ayo, c.s.c. (1995). Bertrand Buby, S.M. (1997); Luigi Gambero, S.M. (2005); Johann Roten, S.M. (2010).

This is great news indeed and a great honor to a well deserved mariologist and a very dear confrere. Congratulations Fr. Peter!!!

Ave Maria!

The friars from Mount Saint Francis Hermitage recently erected their new 160′ radio tower for the radio station they operate out of the friary in Maine, NY, Holy Virgin Mary Radio, WHVM 91.9 FM.

The erection of the tower completed months of preparation work over the course of the summer to lay a new foundation, pour new ground anchors, and assemble the tower on the ground before lifting it into position with a 200′ crane and securing it down. This occurred on the feast of the Holy Guardian Angels, October 2. (more…)

Fra Gabriel Skates his way to Rome Reports: Check it out!

Ave Maria!

You may have caught our previous post of the video done by Spirit Juice Films with Fra Gabriel skateboarding to the Salve Regina with his own vocals. It now has over twenty-two thousand views and has caught the attention of Rome, or at least Rome Reports, who did a video on him as well. Check it out:

It’s not very common to see a Franciscan friar skateboarding, but for Fra Grabriel, it’s business as usual.

He left it behind temporarily when he started his religious life. But a few years later, his superiors encouraged him to take on his hobby once again. Now he uses it as way to reach out to people and talk to them about God.

FRA GABRIEL CORTES

“God has so many ways of using people’s talents to give Him glory. And when I still make use of this sport of skateboarding, I can help others to see the compatibility of exercising the body as well as the soul. As St. Francis says, we are always to preach the Gospel, and if necessary, sometimes use words. And so that’s what I do.”

Fra Gabriel and Salve Regina Goes Viral

Thursday, October 30th, 2014

Ave Maria!

Here is Fra Gabriel an FI friar whom many of you know. He traveled from Australia this year to Chicago to do this video with our friends at Spirit Juice. The accompanying music is the Salve Regina to which he does the vocals. As of this posting the video has racked up 16,000 views in about a week on YouTube!  I guess its “gone viral”. So it is destined for large numbers of views in the years ahead. Great job Fra Gabriel and Spirit Juice!!

Wow! I didn’t know we had so many videos on Fra Gabriel’s skateboarding at AirMaria. Here is the new one from Spirit Juice:

via Salve Regina – YouTube.

Pray. Skate. Live.

Friar Gabriel of the Franciscan Immaculate not only preforms all of his own stunts but also sings his own songs too. All the tricks and vocals are done by Friar Gabriel. Original score by Sean Beeson. http://seanbeeson.com/

Friar Gabriel skated for 7 years as a teenager, but felt his vocation was religious life. He was prepared to abandon his passion for skateboarding to live a life of Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience as Friars of the Immaculate. Six years after becoming Friars and having not skated, he was given obedience to obtain a skateboard and go to the skatepark once a week – to “preach the gospel at all times, when necessary, use words” as Saint Francis stated. Friar Gabriel explains that God has so many ways of using peoples talents to give Him glory. Skateboarding allows the Friars to help others see the compatibility of exercising the body as well as the soul.

Fi News #150 – ( 18min) >>> Play
On September 8th, 2014, Fr. Louis Maximilian received the first profession of vows and the renewal of temporary vows. In this homily, Father speaks of the “reaction” we all owe to God’s “action,” and which is made possible by the “reaction” of the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady’s faith and fidelity to God’s will. He asks us, if we don’t love, who will? We must all live out our call to sanctity, and the practice of Marian Consecration is the “quickest, surest, easiest way” of “reacting” to the love of God and becoming saints; IF WE LIVE IT OUT!

Here are some images of the professions, more may be found here.

A Pilgrim’s Ponderings – Reflections on the Way to Guadalupe « Archdiocese of Washington

Wednesday, October 9th, 2013

Ave Maria!

I thought this was an interesting article about Monsignor Pope’s pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe because right now as I type the AirMaria Crew is also headed to Our Lady or Guadalupe’s Shrine, not in Mexico, but in La Crosse, Wisconsin. We will be filming the Marian Symposium there this Saturday, Oct 12.

Symposium Theme: The Year of Faith, the New Evangelization, and Our Lady
Honored Speakers and Guests:
Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC – Director of the Association of Marian Helpers
Msgr. Charles M. Mangan – Director of the Office of the Marian Apostolate in the Diocese of Sioux Falls
Gloria Dodd – The Marian Library/International Marian Research Institute
Eric Genuis – Composer, virtuoso pianist, and acclaimed performer – a proven thrill to music lovers of both classical and contemporary music. (www.ericgenuis.com)

Below Article by Mons. Charles Pope

I am leading about twenty parishioners to Guadalupe Mexico for the next seven days. As I leave, the following thoughts go with me, some personal, some Ecclesial as well.

1. Elevation. Mexico city and its environs are at or near 5,000 feet. For this human being, the highest point in DC is my former parish (St Ann’s) at 410 feet! Surely, even with recent weight loss, I am in for some breathless climbs. Thus, I am expecting some humility lessons! I think I am strong, but the earth is bigger, and God is infinitely more glorious.

Thank you Lord, teach me humility through elevation and a few steep climbs. I left my asthma inhaler behind when I lost weight. One of the good bishops here in DC told me to bring it anyway, the air is thin. So, I bring it.

2. Evangelization – Our Lady’s appearance at Guadalupe to Juan Diego was a major break-through. Many attempts had been made by the Missionaries of that time toward  the indigenous peoples of Mexico. But the results were discouraging. A combination of fear, rooted in the bloody human sacrifice of the Aztec religion, plus the counter-sign of Spanish Conquerors which made the Christian religion seem no less cruel,. All of this combined to make converts to the Catholic faith a rare thing.

Enter our Lady and the supply of the miraculous Tilma, and within ten years nine to ten million Mexicans became Catholic. That’s 3000 converts a day, a Pentecost every day for ten years!

Yes, Our Lady is Evangelizer in Chief, she’s a Momma on the move, the Mother of
