Fi News #68 – Bushfire at Perth Friary ! ( 05min) >>> Play

In the afternoon of March 1st, 2010 a bushfire started near the friary in Perth, Australia and grew quickly. It jumped the main road and approached our backyard. We decided to evacuate the friary. We took the Blessed Sacrament, a few liturgical items of worth, a few personal items (passports, etc.) and the computers and loaded up the cars. We turned on the lawn sprinklers on the side facing the fire, closed all windows and doors, placed a statue of Our Lady to watch over the fire and drove down the road to a safe distance to wait it out. Roads were blocked by the police. After noticing that the smoke in the immediate area of the friary had died down and after the police told us the friary was ok, we went to a benefactor’s house for something to eat and drink only to be allowed back onto the property around 10:00pm. Damage was limited to a few sheds in the area, no homes or loss of life but about 47 hectares (115 acres) burned.

For the Franciscans of the Immaculate in Perth, Western Australia, the beginning of Lent was not so penitential this year, as they were blessed to have the visit of Fr. Gabriel M. Pellettieri, our Cofounder. He arrived in Perth after a visit to the Philippines and, after staying a week in Perth visiting the friars and sisters, he returned to Italy.

FI News – New website for Australian friars

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Ave Maria!

The website of the friars “Down Under” has recently received a major facelift. In fact, it has been rebuilt from the ground up using Joomla! and is a much more user-friendly format.

The previous website, marygateofheaven.com, had its name based on the weekly Radio Program operated by the friars in Perth, however; the new website, AusMaria.com, is more far-reaching in scope and closer to the goal of the Australian Mission. It stands for “Australia pro Maria” -  gaining Australia for Mary!
Check it out !        www.AusMaria.com

Ave Maria!

Friar Gabriel’s brother, friar Didacus, himself being an accomplished skater, recently visited our two friaries in Western Australia, and while he was there shot another video of Friar Gabriel skateboarding. He used some of the original footage shot in 2004 but also took some great footage by riding a skateboard himself and holding the camera. He then edited the results together with some music from Fr Maximilian Mary Dean and here’s the result – great stuff!
