St. Lucy, Virgin and Martyr

Red

3rd Class

Born at Syracuse in Sicily of noble parents, St. Lucy gave herself to Jesus and chose death rather than lose the incorruptible treasure of her virginity, A.D. 303. Her name occurs in the Canon of the Mass.

INTROIT ¤ Ps. 44. 8.
Dilexisti iustitiam et odisti iniquitatem: propterea unxit te Deus, Deus tuus oleo latitiae prae consortibus tuis. -- Eructavit cor meum verbum bonum: dico ego opera mea Regi. V.: Gloria Patri et Filio et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen. Dilexisti iustitiam et odisti iniquitatem: propterea unxit te Deus, Deus tuus oleo latitiae prae consortibus tuis.    Thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. -- (Ps. 44. 2) My heart hath uttered a good word: I speak my words to the King. V.: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

COLLECT
Hear us, O God, our Savior; that as we rejoice in the feast of blessed Lucy, Thy Virgin and Martyr, so we may be taught by its devotion towards Thee. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
The Advent feria is here commemorated by repeating the Collect from the Mass of the preceding Sunday.

EPISTLE ¤ 2 Cor. 10. 17-18; 11. 1-2.
Lesson from the second Epistle of Blessed Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians.
Lectio Epistolae beati Pauli Apostoli at Corinthios
[Jesus is the heavenly bridegroom of chaste souls.]
Fratres: Qui gloriatur, in Domino glorietur. Brethren, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. For not he who commendeth himself, is approved: but he whom God commendeth. Would to God you could bear with some little of my folly, but do bear with me; for I am jealous of you with the jealousy of God. For I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you a chaste virgin to Christ.

GRADUAL ¤ Ps. 44. 8, 3.
Dilexisti iustitiam et odisti iniquitatem. V.: Propterea unxit te Deus, Deus tuus, oleo laetitiae.
Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Diffusa est gratia in labiis tuis: propterea benedixit te Deus in aeternum. Alleluia.
Thou hast loved justice, and hated iniquity. V.: Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness.
Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Grace is poured abroad in thy lips, therefore hath God blessed thee for ever. Alleluia.

GOSPEL ¤ Matthew 13. 44-52.
† Continuation of the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
† Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Matthaeum.
[The parables of the hidden treasure, of the pearl of great price, and of the net cast into the sea.]
Intellexistis haec omnia? At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: The Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. Again the Kingdom of Heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls. Who when he had found one pearl of great price, went his way, and sold all that he had, and bought it. Again the Kingdom of Heaven is like to a net cast into the sea, and gathering together of all kind of fishes. Which, when it was filled, they drew out, and sitting by the shore, they chose out the good into vessels, but the bad they cast forth. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall go out, and shall separate the wicked from among the just, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Have ye understood all these things? They say to him: Yes. He said unto them: Therefore every scribe instructed in the Kingdom of Heaven is like to a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure new things and old.

OFFERTORY ¤ Ps. 44. 15, 16.
Afferentur Regi virgines post eam: proximae eius afferentur tibi in laetitia, et exsultatione: adducentur in templum Regi Domino.    After her shall virgins be brought to the King: her neighbors shall be brought to thee with gladness and rejoicing: they shall be brought into the temple of the King.

PREFACE
The Common Preface
Cum quibus et nostras voces, ut admitti jubeas, deprecamur, supplici confessione dicentes:    It it truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God, through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with them, we entreat Thee, that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted, while we say in lowly praise:

COMMUNION ¤ Ps. 118. 161, 162.
Principes persecuti sunt me gratis, et a verbis tuis formidavit cor meum: laetabor ego super eloquia tua, quasi qui invenit spolia multa.    Princes have persecuted me without cause, and my heart hath been in awe of Thy words: I will rejoice at Thy words, as one that hath found great spoil.

POSTCOMMUNION
Thou hast filled Thy household, O Lord, with holy gifts: ever cherish us through the intercession of her whose festival we are keeping. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
The Advent feria is here commemorated by repeating the Postcommunion from the Mass of the preceding Sunday.
