Heroic Virtue?

Ave Maria Meditations

On the Valule of Small Annoyances:

But as the opportunities for practicing (heroic virtue) in a big way come rather seldom, we must take advantage of the small ones which occur daily, and which will soon put us in a position to face the greater trials with equanimity when the time comes. There is no one who does not experience a hundred small annoyances every day, caused either by our own carelessness or inattention, or by the inconsideration or spite of other people, or by pure accident.

Our whole lives are made up on incidents (more…)

Face of Pro-Life #187 –  Peter Wolfgang and Corinn Dahm on Religious Freedom ( 28min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!

Peter Wolfgang Executive Director of the Family Institute of CT and hostess Corinn Dahm discuss the Fortnight of Freedom of the US Conference of Bishops and the HHS Mandate that precipitated it. He focuses on the fact that it is not an issue of whether contraception should be available or not but rather religious liberty: shouldn’t there be a conscience clause to let Religious Institutes opt out? Our first freedoms are at stake, the First Ammendment to the Constitution of the United States. If the first amendment means anything it means that the federal government can not do this. This issue transcends all party lines and all creeds because if the government is allowed to do violence to the basic freedom of religion then it can also do violence to any group’s freedoms, liberal or conservative, religious or secular. One of the biggest problems is the redefinition of terms including what is religion, what is health care and who is the magisterium and Pope of the Catholic Church. Should the government be allowed to do this?! We are saying this is not about contraception but it certainly is for the Obama administration. There are huge fines for not complying that is totally out of proportion with any other issue. Notre Dame alone will have to pay about 10million dollars a year if they do not want to comply. Ave Maria!

Jul 30 – Homily – Fr Benedict: Lectio Divina and the Magnificat

Homily #120730m ( 18min) Play – Fr. Benedict draws from the readings for the day, showing that leaven that was mixed in with three measures of flour may be likened to Sacred Scripture. Mary shows how She had thoroughly interiorized the word of God in the Magnificat, which was the preparation for Her to conceive the Word of God made flesh. Through the practice of Lectio Divina, we may follow after Her lead in absorbing the word so that we may conceive the Word of God in our souls.

Conferences #167 – Bp. James D. Conley ( 45min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!

Most Reverend James D. Conley gives the opening keynote address at the 2012 Courage Conference held in Emmitsburg, MD. The talk is titled: “Friendship, Modern Isolation and the New Evangelization in the Thought of Bl. John Henry Newman“. And he bases it on Newman’s motto “Cor ad cor loquitur” or  “Heart speaks to heart” which Bp. Conley has taken as his own episcopal motto since Newman so profoundly influenced him. Newman says, it is friendship that was neglected in his isolated, individualistic society whereas Jesus wants us to become friends with him and with each other. Bp. Conley says this is all the more true today as we have become more materialistic and secular and how we must get back to true sacrificial charity exemplified by the crucified Christ. This will do more to reverse the moral decay of our society than anything else. This process starts with the gift of supernatural charity and faith in ourselves and spreads truth and charity which is then passed on, person to person, as heart speaks to heart. A hearty thank you to the Daughters of St. Paul for providing the audio of the second half of the bishop’s talk which they recorded separately after the power went out.

The Most Blessed of Grandparents

Ave Maria Meditations

Saints Joachim and Anne: parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Grandparents of Jesus Christ

PRAYER TO ST JOACHIM AND ST ANNE:

Great and glorious patriarch, St Joachim, and good St Anne, what joy is mine when I consider that you were chosen among all God’s holy ones to assist in the fulfillment of the mysteries of God, and to enrich our earth with the great Mother of God, Mary most holy. By this singular privilege, you have become most powerful with both the Mother and her Son, so as to be able to obtain for us the graces that are needful to us.

With great confidence I have recourse to your mighty protection, and I commend to you all my needs, both spiritual and temporal, and those of my family. Especially do I entrust to your keeping the particular favour that I desire and look for from your intercession.

And since you were a perfect pattern of the interior life, obtain for me the grace to pray earnestly, and never to set m heart on the passing goods of this life. Give me a lively and enduring love for Jesus and Mary. Obtain for me also a sincere devotion and obedience to Holy church and the sovereign pontiff who rules over her, in order that I may live an die in faith and hope and perfect charity. Let me ever invoke the holy Names of Jesus and Mary. And may I thus be saved. Amen.

Jul 25 – Homily – Fr John Joseph: St. James and Spain

Homily #120725m ( 16min) Play - Ave Maria!

Fr. John Joseph reflects on Dom Prosper Gueranger’s commentary on today’s feast. In the battle for Spain, we see that the Spanish were all but eliminated from Spain as the Islamic Moors tried to establish a foothold from which to move into the rest of Europe. From the small remnant that survived, the Spanish slowly pushed the Moors out of Spain over the course of 700 years.

Likewise, Catholics are again being reduced to a remnant by hostile and powerful forces such as Islam and secularism. Unless Catholics are generous in their faith, their family size, and in offering their children to the service of God, there will not be future generations to keep the churches open, to populate the ranks of clergy and religious, and to continue to proclaim the Gospel to all nations.

Above all, we must pray and make sacrifices. And, as the Spanish did, let us have recourse to St. James, Son of Thunder, that he may aid us with his prayers and deliver us from our foes.

Cornwall: Land of Saints

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

I write this post from my where I am now assigned as chaplain to our contemplative sisters in Lanherne, St. Mawgan in the County of Corwall in England.  I am taking the place of Fr. George Mary Roth, who has faithfully served the sisters and the local people of Cornwall for nine years.  His departure is deeply felt by all and he will be sorely missed.  May God reward him for all the good he has done here. May Our Lady keep him under his mantle along the path on which She guides him.

The picture above is the front yard of the friary which is at the left (click on the photo for a larger file).  Actually the front of the building as you see it is the extern quarters to the convent of our contemplative sisters who occupy the much larger part of the building. (more…)
