In the Midst of it All

Ave Maria Meditations

(In the midst of) Suffering and renunciation through the burdensomeness, discomforts, and exhaustion of the body, through the darkness or at least the dimness of mind, and through the interior suffering of spiritual isolation and aridity. (I seek a) Pure and solid faith. To ask, as I have been advised, for the grace of “simplicity in suffering.”

Material concerns, sometimes too heavy for my already burdened body, time wasted, relationships that hold no attraction for me, the effort to be pleasant and to smile when all of me longs for recollection and for only close friends – all this constitutes my hidden cross, the best cross, which does not elicit sympathy or admiration as illness or misfortune does.

Well, I will carry it “joyfully” until God changes my obligations. Yes, joyfully in spite of dryness, weariness, the costliness of these efforts, gently united to the heart of Jesus, aided by Mary, my Mother, sticking to my usual rule of devotions, meditation, and so on, always strict with myself, yet more gracious to everyone, attentive to remain open, trusting, and abandoned, without narrowness, self-centeredness, or subtlety. Fi News #103 – Fire near Perth friary ( 8 min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!

The friars had a bushfire not far from their Perth friary on March 13, 2011. It looked really bad at first, but it was on the other side of a limestone quarry in a native bush parkland area surrounded by firefighters. If the wind changed direction, or the fire managed to get around the quarry, then we might have a repeat of last year’s fire. Fortunately, the firefighters kept the perimeter of the fire under control and pretty much let the interior burn. Planes and helicopters dropped water on the fire all day and just before evening it was put out.

“They will persecute you…”

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Ave Maria Meditations

No, I was not helpless or worthless or useless in that prison. I was not terribly humiliated because I was rejected as a priest. These men around me were suffering, they needed help. They needed someone to listen to them with sympathy, someone to comfort them, someone to give them courage to carry on. They needed someone who was not feeling sorry for himself but who could truly share in their sorrow. They needed someone who was not looking for consolation but who could console. They needed someone who was not looking for respect and admiration because of what he was but someone who could show them love and respect even if spurned and rejected himself.

As Christ had set the example for me, so could I be to them an example of Christian charity and concern. If nothing else, if they insisted upon shunning me, I could at least pray for them and offer up for them to the Father of us all the suffering and anguish that their rejection of me as a priest caused me. Christ had prayed for his persecutors, “Father, forgive them.” If I could do nothing else at this moment in the prison at Perm, I could do that. (more…)

Mar 27 – Homily – Fr Angelo: Living Water

Sunday, March 27th, 2011
Click to Play

Homily #110327 ( 15min) Play – Fr. Angelo preaches on today’s Gospel where Our Lord comes to the well in Samaria and converses with a women about the living water that he has and how anyone who drinks this water will not thirst again.  Father highlights the fact that the spiritual water he is offering is different from the physical water in the well and infinitely more satisfying but uses His own physical thirst to lift up the woman from the physical to the spiritual realm. She, in turn, goes and gathers her own townspeople to Christ. This all sheds light on the wonder of the incarnation where the true God becomes true man in order for man to truly share in His divinity and to share in the work of spreading this truth.
