Sep 30 – Homily – Fr Ignatius: St Jerome Doctor of Scripture

Homily #100930 ( 04min) Play – Today is the Memorial of St. Jerome Doctor of the Church and writer of the Latin Vulgate. Fr. Ignatius points out that in order to get the truth that is in scripture you must have the right interpretation and thus God has not only given us scripture but an infallible interpreter of it as scripture itself clearly states in 1Tim 3:15 Pillar and foundation of truth is the Church. And Mat 16:18 On this rock (Peter) I will build my Church and the gates of hell (error) will not prevail against it.

Fi News – Need for a New Server

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

airmaria-logo-complete.jpg

Ave Maria!

Well, as many of you have noticed, we have been down quite a few times in the last 24 hours with a message something like:

Our generous benefactor who gives us the web space free (he owns a web design business) has told us that AirMaria has maxed-out the current server.

The Good News

This is good news in that we now have about double the traffic coming to the site.

The Bad News

But it is also bad news in that we now need to upgrade to a dedicated server! This will be about four times the price. Our benefactor would love to pay for the whole server but with EIGHT kids (truly a pro-life Catholic!) he has some pretty serious budget constraints. The cost will be $200 per month.

He is willing to pitch in $50 per month and a lot of his precious time in regard to free consulting and tech support. What we need is three more people to commit to supporting us with a $50 monthly donation. If you are willing, we can even set up an electronic payment feature that will make the entire process as easy as possible in the months to come.

With this server we will be able to keep AirMaria going well into the future, even with 20 times the traffic! It is something to seriously pray about. Let me know by sending an email to apostolate@airmaria.com

In the Hearts of Jesus and Mary,

Fra Roderic

The Archangels and Our Lady of Good Success

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

These prayers are based on the words of the Archangels that appeared to the Franciscan sister, Mother Mariana on January 20, 1610.  On this night, Mother Mariana was praying to Our Lord, Jesus Christ to be able to offer some proof of her strong love for Him. Her love for Christ rivaled that of the angelic spirits. As a result of this prayer, the three archangels appeared to Mother Mariana to strengthen and prepare her for the appearance of Our Lady with all of the prophetic messages she was to give her and for the encouragement to obey the request for a statue to be made for this devotion.  She would also have the aid of St. Francis of Assisi.

Encampment Version 2.0 in Development

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

The Fall Father and Son Encampment has been cancelled for a number of reasons, not least of which is my current status of living mostly in New Bedford until November when a new Guardian will arrive to take over the run of the house there.  It may be a good time to take a break anyway, as we have been tossing ideas around about how to make the Encampments better and the preparations more manageable.

Right now we are talking about taking the weekend “off campus,” so to speak to a campground and conducting perhaps one larger event every year, instead of three smaller ones.  (We will continue to use the obstacle course at the friary for other events.)  I would also like to open the Encampment to boys who have no fathers (or fathers who are involved with them at this level), since fatherlessness is a big problem and one that has long concerned me.

Please pray for the Knights of Lepanto who have worked so hard to make these encampments a success.  We have had a great deal of positive feedback and are very much encouraged.  We hope to have something really great, innovative and powerful in the Queen of Lepanto to present for next year.  I will keep you all abreast of the developments from this forum.

Thank you for all your support and please spread the word about next years open encampment.

Leticia Velasquez and Eileen Haupt, co-founders of Keep Infants with Down Syndrome discuss what it is like to raise a child with Down Syndrome and what it has added to their lives and to their families. The benefits they received include greater patience, close bonds with their special family members and a new appreciation of the common gifts of life like walking and talking and the many other hings that take a longer time for Downs children to learn.  They also learn how much children with disabilities can overcome difficulties and become productive, functioning members of society and even bring special talents. Both mothers relate how much religious devotion their Down children have.

Ave Maria Meditations

For this is the will of God: your sanctification (1Th 4:3)

Wanting to be a saint: the first necessary step in persevering to the end of the way are real and effective desires.

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. As a hart longs for flowing streams, so longs my soul for thee, O God When shall I come and behold the face of God?

We pray thus in the liturgy of the Mass. The deer attempting to slake his thirst with water is the psalmist’s symbolic way of describing the desire for God present in the heart of an upright person: a thirst and vehement desire for God! Such is the aspiration of one who is not content to accept worldly success as the satisfaction for human ambitions. For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life?

Jesus’ question forces us to take a radical look at the broad horizon of our life to which only God gives ultimate meaning. My soul thirsts for God! The saints were men and women with a great desire to belong to God completely despite their defects. We could each ask ourselves: have I a true desire to be a saint? (more…)

Sep 26 – Homily – Fr Bonaventure: Lazarus vs Culture of Death

Sunday, September 26th, 2010
Click to Play

Homily #100926 ( 32min) Play – In today’s Gospel we have the story of Lazarus and the rich man. Fr. Bonaventure uses this to emphasize the impossibility of compromising the culture of Christ with that of death. He mentions that many Fathers of the Church call this a factual story and so we should take it very seriously. The rich man’s sin was not so much the indulging in extravagant pleasure but doing so when Lazarus was literally dying from poverty. On the contrary Lazarus went to heaven not so much because he suffered but in his misery did not condemn the rich man but prayed for him. The rich man did not have regard for the unique dignity of his fellow man while Lazarus did. The rich man thus followed the culture of death that lead to eternal death while Lazarus followed the culture of life and entered eternal life. Father relates this to modern forms of this same culture of death.
