The kind of ridiculous superstition such as gnosticism is indeed more present in our age than one might think. It’s all just sugercoated arrogance.

Sort of like a “Don’t touch me, I might make you holy” attitude.

It’s interesting to observe the similarities between gnosticism and a more recent religion: Scientology. in both systems there is a process of hidden knowledge, including a stage at which one is considered enlightened. in Scientology the process is known as the bridge and the “enlightenment” stage known as “Clear” or “Operating Thetan”. Unlike some gnostic teachers though, getting to clear in Scientology will cost big bucks. also another observation is their creation story also features a kind of analogue to the aeon/demiurge relationship in the form of Xenu the intergalactic overlord and body thetans (the souls of dead alien creatures, no I am not making this up.) in this case the analogy is not exact but within Scientology’s teachings there is a need to separate oneself from attached body thetans and eventually in one’s death separate from one’s own body and operate as a thetan distinct from the body itself, thus leading to the same gnostic aims. this all being said I find ever more true the words of Ecclesiastes:

What has been, that will be; what has been done, that will be done. Nothing is new under the sun. Even the thing of which we say, “See, this is new!” has already existed in the ages that preceded us.
