Our 400th Post!!Deo Gratias!
Fr. Bonaventure relates today’s Gospel to the life of St. Bartholmew. The apostle who “had no guile”, a simple man yet not simplistic.
St. Bartholmew was able to glorify God in his martyrdom of being skinned alive while not despairing but persevering his faith.

Catholic World News in an article entitled?Chinese bishop arrested: to silence Pope’s message? reports that on?Thursday August 23, 2007, after days of surveillance,?Jia Zhiguo, the prominent underground Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Zheng Ding in Hebei Province, was arrested and many of the faithful were interrogated by police.? The apparent reason was the bishop’s attempts at trying to promulgate the Pope’s letter to the Chinese Catholics.
… Bishop Jia was preparing his own pastoral letter to accompany the release of the Pope’s message to the Chinese Church. The bishop had been repeatedly warned by Chinese officials that he should not distribute the Pope’s message. That papal message rejected the authority of the government-backed Catholic Patriotic Association. (more…)

Shamelessly pulled entirely from the blog of Dr. Edward Peters, JD, JCD. I really had no idea there was such a practice as “joint” celebration of Penance.
The practice of spouses jointly celebrating the sacrament of confession recently garnered support from Catholic News Service veteran columnist Fr. John Deitzen. Provided that couples “approve and consider it helpful for their marriage”, Deitzen holds that spouses may confess their sins in each other’s presence and receive absolution. He notes only that each spouse would be bound by the seal of confession in regard to what he or she learned about the other.
Dr. Peters is a canon lawyer and is always great reading. It also helps to have a canon lawyer around as a resource His books on Annulments and Excommunication are spectacular!

I saw this story yesterday and couldn’t help but feel for all those college kids who won’t have affordable birth control options when they head back to school this year. Then I saw this story today and saw a silver lining. My heart really does go out to those kids with their irresistible urges sipping Vodka Redbulls and having their right to low-cost subsidized (by our tax dollars) birth control taken away. I am equally gladdened, however, to know that some Pharmaceutical companies are making big profits off the whole thing. Me thinks those kids could have a good shot at the legal lottery. I mean, they’ve been wronged and they’re suffering. Where’s the ACLU????

Those wacky protestants…
London, Aug 23, 2007 / 10:49 am (CNA).- The openly homosexual Episcopal bishop, Bishop V. Gene Robinson, has planned to enter into a civil partnership with his long-term partner just weeks before next year’s Lambeth Conference, reports the Church of England Newspaper.
Seems they all have a “call from God” they’re following.
He told the interviewer about his love for the Anglican Communion, but said he would never step down, as it would go against God’s call for his life.
He said his election was the result of his community’s vote and that he is not sure that they necessarily did the right thing. “That community tried its very best to discern the will of God, and we may be wrong, I am ready to admit to you that I cannot be sure that this is the right thing or the right time or the right way.??
He also said he believes Episcopal Archbishop Peter Akinola of Nigeria “is following his call from God as best as he can?? in leading the campaign against gay bishops.
??I just wish he could believe I am following my call from God as best I can,” Robinson reportedly said.
I wonder which one’s right, or maybe they’re both right? God doth have a sense of humor?

Short Video Series #4 – Fr. Joseph Fessio, S.J. on the recent document issued by the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith (6min) >>> Play |

Ave Maria!
This second to last part of our series by Fr. Joseph Fessio, S.J., on recent Vatican documents covers the document issued July 9th, two days after the Motu Proprio, by the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith entitled “Responses to some Questions Regarding Certain Aspects of the Document on the Church” i.e. Lumen Gentium
This document was issued by the Congregation to clarify some points of confusion since the close of the Second Vatican Council.
Questions addressed in this talk are:
- Did the Second Vatican Council change the Catholic Doctrine on the Church?”
- What is the meaning of the word ‘subsists’ in the statement the “Church … subsists in the Catholic Church” LG 8
- Why the word subsist was used instead of ‘is’.
- Why does the council use the word ‘churches’ for the separated Eastern Orthodox?
- Why does the Council not use the word Church for the Protestant communities?
In answer to the first question Fr. Fessio quotes Pope Paul VI, who after the Council says, “What Christ willed, we also will. What was, still is. What the Church has taught down the centuries, we also teach.”
AMEN!

I still don’t get it, how a woman has a “right” to kill her child. It’s insane. Never fear that Planned Parenthood is there to protect that “right”. It seems PP is in a tizzy that Missouri has passed a law, which goes into effect next Tuesday, that would require abortion clinics to meet certain already-established state health standards. Wow! Really? Planned Parenthood thinks the law will infringe on “abortion rights”.
Jefferson City, Aug 22, 2007 / 10:43 am (CNA).- Planned Parenthood filed a federal lawsuit Monday seeking to strike down a new Missouri law that requires abortion clinics to meet the same state health and safety standards already applied to other types of ambulatory surgical centers. (more…)

…the Catholic Church! It is depressingly vogue to sue the US Catholic Church these days. Of course, our litigious society makes it oh so easy. Articles like this one over on Catholic World News illustrate that not only do victims win playing the legal lottery so do the lawyers! I’m not trying to diminish the emotional pain any REAL victims may have endured even if I can’t understand how to put a $ on recovering one’s emotional health but dog-piling on the Church is irrational and unacceptable. After the victims (supposed and real) bankrupt the diocese the lawyers have to make sure they get their fair share. I can’t remember where I read it but a lawyer representing a group of victims suggested a portion of the Sunday collection should be surrendered for payment to his clients. This would ensure he and his clients get paid regardless of the solvency status of the diocese.
I was not raised a Catholic but I wonder if I were to approach a lawyer and ask to make a claim against a diocese if that little fact would hinder my case at all? I wonder if my children will have to grow up in a world where their weekly collections are divided between Church and state? How many churches are going to have to close their doors because they’ve been sued out of existence? Folks are going to have an awful lot to answer for all in the name of trying to make a quick/easy buck. Makes meditating on Christ’s suffering in the Garden of Olives much easier let me tell you. The gates of hell may not prevail against the Church but US law will ensure there is a lien on the property.
